Just back from the dealership who replaced my radio. 2009 Taco only 2 months old & the radio would turn on all by itself, sometimes over a modest bump, sometimes just whenever, once sound but no display, and last week I got a little shock off the knob.
I had been apprehensive about having the work done, but it was a neat & tidy job.

Same problem from day 1 , It took a few weeks to order the new unit but it seems to work perfectly now. (and no marks on the dash)

Mine does it too... It's been doing the (volume not working) for a while, I hadn't really noticed because it happened when I'd get a phone call & I'd try to turn the volume down & it wouldn't, I then would just turn it off, by the time I was done with the call I forgot it happened.

Then yesterday the display was blank for a few minutes, today the volume did not work for a while then 10 minutes later it turned off all by itself, I thought WTF?

I was upset until I read this forum & other forums, now I know I'm not the only one & I have to go take care of it... I too was thinking, I don't want anyone ripping apart my new truck, but I guess I gotta do it.

Mine sometimes does not let me change the volume on the knob on the front of the radio. Then I can only change it useing the steering wheel controls. Then for whatever reason it will go back to letting me use the knob on front again. I have a sure cure for this...change the damn thing out with a good HU. Which is my plan. I was talking to Mr Marv last night at length and he said the stock speakers are really cheesy and weigh like only 7/8 of an ounce. I had no idea that is the kind of audio they are putting in these trucks but judging from the sound in my truck I can easily believe that. Oh well...

I will not ever take my truck to a stealership to have anything done. Guess that will put me in a bind if something major breaks and I have to do warranty repair huh?

There's a TSB for that. They'll replace the sub amplifier. Mine does it to, and I'm taking it in to get looked at next week.

I brought my Truck in 6-24-09 with Mileage 862. To refresh everyone what my problem is: the radio turns off by itself, it turns on by itself, volume sometimes does not respond when turning the knob on the radio, Power does not turn on or off when I push the power up button, display goes blank & flickers on/off showing strange gibberish text, etc.

Since the problem is intermittent when I brought it in the technician attempts to get the radio to react with the issues I described, he does this by hitting the top of the dash with his fist, which I think is BS way do find out an issue with anything.

Toyota Fremont, CA tells me they've researched the issue & acknowledge it is a common problem for which there is currently no fix. They give me a case number & say they'll contact me when there is a fix for it. It is now August 6, 2009 & I'm driving around in a 5 month old truck with a radio that sometimes works!

Come On Toyota, How long is this going to take? Fix My Issue!

I'll keep everyone who is having the same problem up to date. If anyone knows something that I don't please respond to the thread.

Santacruz they are soooo jerking you around! My radio freaked out on the test drive. Sport City in Dallas has had a new one on order for me for 3 weeks and it will porbably be another week before it gets in since there are so many of thewse defect stereos on back order.

Go back to the stealership and demand they order a replacement!

    Good luck!

The radios must have had bad solder joints on the production run because I notice it mainly happens in extreme temps, or if you press a specific spot on the radio face everything is fine.

I've had my radio replaced once already and now need another; dealer said it could be a few months to get a new one too.

I'm having the same problem as some of you from last year with the volume control on the head unit isn't working from time to time. Did everyone just take it back to the dealer or is there some sort of quick fix?

This is the most absurd statement I have ever read. But it's your vehicle and ultimately your decision to accept a product that may have flaws.

I too have this problem. The knob on the dash will sporadically not work for turning up and down volume. However, for me, when this is happening the steering wheel controls have always worked.

You must have some real terrible dealers near where you are.

The one I use has never tried to come up with any extra work or over charged me.
I have been going there since 1996 to have my '96 4Runner serviced every 5K, my son's 2000 4Runner serviced every 5K and we bought my wife's 2007 4Runner there (6K$ off MSRP too, wow) and service every 5K.

None of them has ever had major work done and the dealer has never recommended any.

Me, I personally wouldn't take my Toyota's anywhere BUT the dealer.

my steering wheel controls also work when i have this problem. It only happens for a short period of time and then it works as normal. Did you ever get it fixed or you are just dealing with it?

It has only just started happening in the last 2 weeks (have only had the truck since late May). Didn't know it was such a wide spread problem until seeing this thread so will probably take it in to the dealer to get addressed. Will let you know how it goes.
