    Just wondering......
Will the back-up camera/tailgate handle work with an aftermarket headunit?
I have a headunit that has the back-up camera connections. But is the 09 camera made to work only with the OEM headunit?

I was wondering this today... I have a license-place camera which works great... but is so low that it's only useful for hitching a trailer. It would be nice if I could also spy on people behind me at red lights too. :D

I'm sure the OE camera would work... all of those cameras are just composite video connections anyhow... a little splicing... no problem. Anyone seen the handle/camera for sale? How much?

PS. The lightning in the window to the right of the TacomaWorld title on this page distracted me far more than I should should be admitting...

I have the homelink mirror and it has an equally complicated plug... when researching how to install the homelink one I came across the installation instructions for the Gentex LCD mirror and there were just two wires for video signal.

If I used the tailgate camera I'd just get the camera and handle and splice the camera directly into the wires I already have running back to the rear of the truck for the license-place camera.

If I can find the handle+camera for a reasonable price I'll post which wires to spice after I figure it out.

Gerone from trdparts4u gave me the prices:

    ITEM LIST QUAN SALE
    CAMERA AS 720.15 1 541.19
    BOLT, FLA 0.57 2 0.43
    HANDLE AS 83.94 1 63.08

So... the camera is hella expensive, but I could have figured that one. The handle isn't too bad. Since the pioneer backup camera will fit (I think) in that handle I can get that for around $170. I'll order the handle and start looking for a camera.
