I have an '09 Tacoma that does not have the temperature/compass overhead display. Does anyone have a link to previous threads on installing one, or have other information.

    Thanks

In '09 you may have the harness in the headliner already, hopefully someone will confirm. That is the case with many up till 2014 where the Canbus connector no longer exists. There is no physical temperature sensor needed to get the temp, the data comes from the computer via the Canbus network. There is a sensor behind the grille whether you have the temp display or not, that one feeds the ECU to control the engine and makes the temp available via Canbus.

If the harness doesn't exist, call Bob at Bobs mirrors, he's a sponsor here. I got my mirror from him for my '14 and he's excellent to deal with.

I too got mine from bobs, he is excellant to deal with. Drop your overhead and see if it has a plug up there. He will help you with what you need.

If you remove your overhead console, it's only 2 Phillips, you'll be able to tell if the wires are in there.

Thanks guys. I looked by the grill and saw the sensor there so it seems like it is pre wired. Will that work for the overhead display, or just for a mirror? I am hoping to get the overhead display. Would Bobs still be the guy for that?

Bob is still your guy, but having the sensor behind the grille does not mean that you're you're pre-wired. That sensor feeds temp info to the ECU and is there whether you have an overhead console or not.

Installed Overhead Compass and Temperature Display along with outside temperature sensor and wiring; LED lights reverse backup; LED license plate lights; Added GTA Bluetooth Audio kit to stock radio for iphone audio; Spare tire steel braided air hose extension connection to rear bumper; Installed new headlights along with new bulbs PIAA H4 XTreme and for fog lights PIAA H10 XTreme bulbs. Installed new hood with "hood-scoop". Installed Predator Side Steps. Replaced front chrome grill with customized color matched (Desert Sand Mica) grill with added TOYOTA lettering (also in matched color), installed and secured tailgate anti-theft devices. Also installed a new external TPMS monitor for all 4 tires.
On your 2009 Tacoma, remove the current OEM overhead console (as previously mentioned) and just check to see if the wire harness is there? I'd bet it is and if so then all you would need is to purchase an overhead console with Temperature and Compass display and install it!

I have an 08' and like yourself, I wanted an overhead Compass and Temperature display installed. After researching, like you, I checked behind my front grill and (you guessed it) no Temperature Sensor!

I then removed the original overhead console (holds sunglasses and garage door opener) and checked to see if the wire harness was there and lo and behold it sure was there!

Purchased an overhead console with Compass and Temp. display (from a member here) purchased an OEM Temperature Sensor from the dealership, purchased some wire and connectors and then installed, behind the front grill, the Temperature Sensor and after all was finished I had an Overhead Console with Compass and Temp. display!

Running the wiring for the OEM Temperature Sensor was a bit of a challenge but over all worth it in the end. But since you already have that installed in your Tacoma, all that would need to be done would be to replace your overhead console with one that has Compass and Temp. display and all it is, is just "plug n play" for you!

So, as you stated, if you already have the OEM Temperature Sensor installed behind your front grill, then more than likely your Tacoma also has the overhead wiring harness (just hanging) there!

Give it a shot and check it, you've got nothing to lose and good luck!
