When I started reading this it did not seem correct to me. Finally spoke to a CHP officer in my cycling club today about it.
According to him the only way you are going to be in violation is if the hitch is obstructing the view of the rear license plate.

I know someone that had his hitch yanked out and heaved through the window of his Suburban. IIRC, it was about $850 to fix it.

Which doesn't help if you discover he has no license, registration, insurance, or assets!

It would take three Chuck Norris's to pull my hitch out, as it is locked in-place.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
I'm not that extreme but I have taken them off and set them in the back of the truck before. Not only does it look retarded leaving them in but as I said before, walk by a truck not paying attention and crack your shin on one and it hurts like hell. Some places it is illegal which is good, hopefully it'll be that way in all 50 states soon. Hitches are for towing and removable for a reason. People are supposed to take them out when not in use. If not they tend to rust in place. When I got my double cab the PO had left a 3 way hitch in and it rusted together with the reciver. I had a hell of a time getting it out and now thanks to the rust the reciver is destroyed and I have to buy a new one so I can tow stuff.

Having a hitch in wouldnt have helped me whenI got rear ended in my last truck. That jeep hit me going probably 50 mph while I was at a dead stop.

When I get an aftermarket bumper in the rear on this trucm though I'll probably leave a hitch in. It saved one of my friends parents vehicles 2x from slower collisions.

The solution for walking into one is to not be so dense and look where you're walking! Its not that hard.

I don't doubt it, anyone can with the requisite amount of force and tools. Same as a house, I could say that I can get in a steel reinforced door in 20 seconds... but the force used would be great. The question is: "Is the juice worth the squeeze?"

Nothing yet. Old truck had the works.
I know it sure freakin hurts when you are running through a campground at night and you hit your friends hitch right in the middle of your shin.

    Further up someone mentioned this:

    http://www.superbumper.com/

MFG. claims 60 sec. install. I wonder how long it takes a thief to uninstall it? Anyone have any experience with the product and how you handle anti-theft?

    Thanks.

Whether or not they actively enforce it while not on an accident, I don't think it's worth it in case something happens and you're found at fault for leaving it in. Don't want to give insurance companies any more opportunities to screw you. Plus you're responsible if someone gets hurt on your car (whether they should be that close or not)

Example: I got hit a couple years ago and it pulled some of the metal out and away from the car. It was perfectly driveable so I was still operating it until I could get it appraised. When my adjuster came to look at it be told me I can't drive it, and they won't cover me if someone hurts themselves on it walking by and brings a lawsuit against me

There is nothing to enforce in California unless it blocks the rear license plate.
It is not illegal to leave a drop hitch in the receiver whether we mostly agree it is a pain in the shins or not.
What about hitch mounted bike racks that stay on vehicles full time?
If some dummy is walking like a zombie looking at their phone they could hit it.
People have to be responsible for some of their clumsiness.

Agreed but people will look for any reason to sue someone. In my state it's illegal, and I don't want to give the insurance companies any reason not to cover me in an incident

Then why even leave your house or buy a vehicle? If you don't have a vehicle, then nobody can sue you for ANY vehicle-related issues. This is the best course of action. If you don't have a vehicle you can save all that money and take public transportation, think of how "Green" you'll be.

If it's illegal and easy to avoid, then I'll abide by it, is what I'm saying. If it's not illegal in your state, and you're not liable for someone getting hurt on it, then go buck wild. If you need me, I'll be in my in my fallout shelter where no one can sue me:jerkoff:

Can you please reference the MA general law that states this? I'm curious and have been looking but cannot find reference to this regulation??
