Evidently , here in Illinois - Salt of the Earth Illinois , some lawmaker knocked his shins or got kneecapped once too often and it's against the law now to leave a hitch on the back of a vehicle all the time . Have yet to hear of anyone actually being ticketed on it ..

They have some sort of law like that here too (Ontario, Canada). Though only for about how far the hitch is allowed to stick out when not towing.

I was approached by a cop in a parking lot about my big-ass hitch, I pointed at my Farm Plate, and he walked away.

Ontario is no longer issuing or replacing damaged Farm plates as of this year. Having them exempts the vehicle from being e-tested every two years, and having them exempts the owner from a shitload of ridiculous regulations. They are, however, allowing present owners to renew/retag them as required.

    ars1_zps2o4yupzl_71d4af65490257e88abd38e90a090c680162237f.jpg

    I treasure my Farm Plate.

    -------------------------------------------

EDIT: This pic is not current. I installed a 2" AAL today in addition to the 1" block already there. The hitch now stares right between the eyes of most drivers of little piss-ass cars. Now if I am rear-ended by some dumb f*ck, he'll end up under my truck with a hitch that's folded his hood back into his windshield.

Avid Off Road rear bumper guard and front light bar are going on tomorrow. Watch out mall crawlers!

Just the essentials and no extra fluff.
I've been backed into by morons with trailer hitches more than I've been rear ended.

Because most modern bumpers are not cheap, and a little sacrificial damage to a hitch is wayyyyy better than replacing/repairing the OEM bumper. Why do cops wear bullet proof vests? Why do firefighters where Nomex clothing? Why are there seatbelts in cars? Why do some motorcyclists wear helmets? Why was TPMS invented? Why is there clearcoat over paint? Why are there traffic lights? Why do some work boots have steel toes? Why do surgeons wear latex gloves while operating? Why is there reflective markings on road boundaries? Why are there child car seats? Why are there railroad crossing lights and barriers? Why ask why?

Why do they engineer the bumper as a crumple zone when you can transfer all the force to your frame through the trailer hitch ?

    Full Definition of CRUMPLE ZONE

: a section of an automobile body designed to absorb the force of an impact in order to protect the passengers

    Source: http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/crumple zone

The point of leaving the hitch in is to mitigate less-than-lethal rear-end collisions. As you have seen in numerous pictures and anecdotal reports contained within this very thread.

    Hope this helps.

And as you can see from other threads bypassing the crumple zone with a hitch leads to a totaled frame and soft tissue damage to the occupants for moderate speed collisions that would otherwise have only required a replacement of the bumper and so rear end parts.

If I have to replace my bumper the nice thing is insurance pays for it - all of it - and I get my vehicle back.

If my frame is bent then insurance totals my vehicle, does not compensate me for 3rd party parts or the labor to install them. I end up losing money and time with a totaled vehicle.

And if I've got soft tissue damage - well nothing ever really fixes that, I just live with it for the rest of my life.

So sure, be all smug about the punched radiator on the idiot that hit you a 15 mph. You'll not be quite so smug when they hit you at 35 mph with the hitch in.

If you like the satisfaction of doing more damage to another vehicle in low speed collisions because "they deserve it" only to put yourself at the risk of worse damage to your vehicle and your body in higher speed collisions have at it. I also hear that if you are pissed off at your face a good course of action is to cut off your nose.

I think it should be illegal in all states for hitches to be left in the receiver when not towing. If you've ever walked into one of those things in a parking lot that some douche leaves in all the time and crack your shin on it, you know what I'm talking about.

When I got my truck, it had that exact same thing in it except the hook. The PO had left it in there so long it had rusted itself in there. Was a bitch to get out, another reason not to leave them in.
