I live in PA, "way up north of interstate 80", and even though we usually get a good bit of snow thankfully we don't get too many flatlanders attempting to drive 85 in a raging blizzard.

But, holy crap OP I nearly peed my pants when Iread about the chains on the wrong axle.

    RIGHT ON BROTHER!!!

It's very rare that others can benefit from our frustrations. I think you nailed it, thanks for taking the time to post.

Can you explain this? I didn't even think that they still made chains. When I bought cables, Napa only had cables. :notsure:

cables are round (slick) while the chains are staggered so they should (in theory) grip better.

Naw they still make chains... the interweb has them! :D haha but I know what you mean.. most of the stores ive been in kevin only have the cables now.. but I think im going to buy chains and skip the cables.. when I tried my dads cables I was pretty disappointed in them.

    This was an inside joke.
The boyfriend in the Heep was 2wd and he had cables while the Frontier had chains. After the chains were on correctly the Frontier pulled out the court no problem, no wheel slip while the Heep struggled big time to get up the hill. Very entertaining.

    I just peed a little.

    As someone that ...

    (a) grew up in wisconsin
    (b) was *taught* how to fucking drive
    (c) had noone to call in the event of a 'snow emergency', and
    (d) never once missed a shift at work for snow

    I heartily endorse this thread.

This INCLUDES some days where we had whiteout blizzard conditions, and I left the house TWO HOURS ahead of time. I may have been driving a Pontiac 6000 SE, but with patience, skill, and resolve you can drive through a LOT, if you're smart about it.

Winter isn't really all that hard to drive through, assuming you aren't a retard. Most people fail that part of the qualification, though.

That's what I was picturing in my head, but then I thought that they would be at least pretty close because metal is metal which is better than tires alone. And I've seen a lot of ski resort vehicles with cables instead of chains, so who knows...

Hmmm, well I'll have to try mine out at some point then. I haven't even used my cables yet. Perhaps when I get bigger tires sometime in the future I'll go with chains.

    Good to know! :)

Ah, I see. Well now I learned something today. :D

FWIW, these are IMO the BEST tire chains you can get.

The diamond shaped instead of a ladder shape means that you always have chain contact with the surface of the road. Traditional ladder chains are a constant cycle of chain contact/tire contact/chain contact, etc etc etc.

For cables, again, purely my opinion the Shur Grip cables for a similar (albeit not as good) reason:

You forgot to mention when you are driving 5 mph and not pulling over to let people pass, having your hazard lights on doesent make a diffrence
