THIS! A buddy of mine had to swerve off the road to avoid a white minivan that was driving 5mph in the fast lane with no lights on. He couldn't see the minivan until it was too late. My buddy was probably at fault too but not having your lights on during a snow storm with limited visibility does not make any sense to me.

Awesome write up Jason!!! I like to use three 5 gallon buckets of sand and a 2x4 frame to hold them over the axel. No mess to clean up at the end of the season and I always have dry sand if I need it for ice.

    Nice thread
I don't use chains when going snow wheeling in the deep stuff, the best footprint is a wide one that floats on top of the snow and chains just dig you in. A good set of wide tires that are aired down to 0-4psi is the key, and sipping is highly benneficial as well.

When i do use chains for the more shallow and icy stuff i have a set of vbar chains which work way better than any cable ever will. I'm not a fan of the locking cams, cables doubled up work great.

And for those going the economical route that have larger tires you can always find a cheap set of semi truck tire chains on c-list that you can cut down to your custom size.

Well written and great info. It seems that as soon as the white stuff starts to fall people on the roads generally become stupid and chose panic and stupidity over common sense.

Up here we get snow very often, some years we have snow even in the summer... but it doesn't matter if we had snow early in the week, the roads cleared up and then it snowed again on the weekend, its almost like people have never driven in snow before.

You hit on so many good points and props to you for calling people out. In Canada some provinces make it mandatory to have snow tires or a winter rated tire, cause they know the roads get bad, but then people bitch cause they need another set of tires.... Honestly spend the money, and be safe cause tires are far cheaper then repair bills and hospital trips.

My most favorite moment was yesterday, I watched a Honda Civic drive straight off an on ramp (luckily it was into a open field) but they got caught in the loose snow on the side of the road and instead of taking their foot off the gas, they hit the gas harder in the hopes of accelerating while turning the wheel to recover.....

people are special, and snow just brings out the best in them.....

Thanks for the afternoon chuckle man. It was a fitting read since we are getting dumped on right now here in wyo. On my drive around town today I just about saw all the above. Rage ensued.

The pile of snow on top of car or blocking the windows drives me mad! When it has a chance to freez and come off the next day it could kill the person behind.

By the way, I love this thread. Good info, and plus, the manner in which you wrote it is just funny as hell.

    good post!

idid not read all the posts. but another thing if you start to slide DON’T slam on the breaks, This also goes for driving in rain.

also if you driving on a snow covered on plowed road and are in 4WD and get side ways. You can steer IN the direction you want to go and give a light tap on the gas. BE PREPARED IT MAY switch and go sideways the other way.
