Easy solution— ditch the auto transmission from the 90’s get the 6 speed manual.

OP..any update? And here I am, thinking my X5 is pretty unreliable at 85k miles with a bad O2 sensor that stealership replaced just yesterday under extended warranty.

Wait, you said Rusty Wallace a moment ago. Is this at Fox for service? If so, good luck. I had a limb fall on a windshield resulting in some minor cab damage, and the body shop sourced the parts thru Fox. For whatever reason the body shop did not replace the third brake light, which resulted in leaks later. Contacted the body shop, who contacted Fox, who said "It's a TSB, we can do it no problem, bring it on over." Dropped the truck off in the morning, called back in the afternoon to find that the brake light was backordered. All they wanted my truck for was the VIN. When I came in the next day, as I was driving in to pick up the truck, two service clowns are hauling ass out of Fox Toyota in my truck. We turn around honking, they turn around and say they were pulling the truck around for me. Only they didn't know I was coming, it doesn't take two people to do that, and it's lunch time.

After the light showed up, I came in and waited while they worked on it. I like to let the kids run around like maniacs sometimes, and this seemed appropriate. After getting home I noticed a scratch in the fabric of the center headrest, where they had to pull down the headliner. They offered to "make it right" after I left a bad review, but I had seat covers on order and a good understanding that this is a place you go if you bought the vehicle there. Hopefully this works in your favor.

As far as the troll suspicions, look at OP's opening post, click the image and go to his smugmug account. Cycle thru the pics, you can see the tailgate sticker, paper plate, and license plate ring all bear "Fox Toyota." Background is accurate for Clinton TN, other details are accurate (employment, shit weather...) to unique aspects of the area. If this is troll-work, it deserves a Smitty Award or something.

X5'S ARE NOTORIOUSLY UNRELIABLE... as well as expensive to fix especially with the turbo motors... quite literally quoted to me by a master BMW tech "these are your bread and butter engines/jobs" you will tie up a lift and an engine table to drop this K- member and engine out from below on a service table/ engine cradle/subframe jig. this was during a seminar on repairing turbo BMW engines. mostly they were serious design flaws by BMW to save time/weight/money.. and they'll cost you the customer tons of money.. not specifically in parts, but labor to drop the engine/trans out the bottom as there is no access through the engine bay..

if i were you. I would dump that X5 before it gets to be a serious problem.

    You're kinda new here.

Do some searches on CPS and/or low trans fluid from the factory. Reading will fill the rest of your day. And tomorrow.

Granted, these seemed to be on earlier 3rd gens, but there is plenty of history.

I really dislike all non-dipstick autos as well.

    #savethedipsticks #dipsticksmatter

When someone comes up with a simple retrofit dipstick, they'll have more sales than they can imagine.

Well....I've never had a diesel emission failure till the o2 sensor yesterday. I've had minor repairs covered under extended warranty but the diesel engine has been rock solid. I've taken this to Portland (from Sacramento) last year on a single tank of diesel .

If you go to Bimmerforums (I'm also a member there), there are tons of people with high mileage X5 and diesel engines with over 150-200k.

Only reason why I'll be trading mine for the 2020 Taco is the need for a pickup bed (bought a rental property last year and using a family's Tundra right now). And the maintenance is on the high side even in Indy shops.

ah ddnt mention it was the diesel version... those are a bit more rare.. usually it's the turbo/na gas jobs.. had lotsa fun tearing into N54's & the like.. they develope oil leaks for no reason other than to cost the customer money.. especially the 3-6 series X-drives... prone to oil pan leaks.. requires dropping the subframe, and suspending the engine from above.. dropping the exhaust, and removing the oil pan, resealing with thin RTV (there is no gasket, aluminum oil pan), replace driveshaft seals (shafts for passenger side goes through engine crankcase), and replacing all parts back on the car... takes roughly 5-6 HOURS to do.. but the shop bills for 8hours..

New to the forum not to Tacoma's. Im very aware of the low trans fluid some people talked about and how to check it as well. Im asking OP to provide updates if this is a totally unrelated issue to trans fluid that no one knows about. But thanks for the lecture!

4Runner Trail wheels and Toyo Open Country ATII tires 265-70-17. Cosmetic stuff like Pro grille and OffRoad black bumper trim, vinyl delete on side, added hood graphic, OEM tube steps.
Bad crank sensor would not set a high trans temp code.

Off topic, but what step bars are those? Look like they hang a bit lower than the OEM oval bars which would be nice because you can't barely get your foot on it since it is so close to the cab.

I believe it did set that code off on most of the CPS failures.

The only code OP didn't get, was the brake malfunction that typically goes along with the crank sensor failure.

Actually, throwing the high trans temp code is the most common indicator that the CPS failed.
