Some dealers are better than others about doing a proper PDI before the vehicle hits inventory. At my old Toyota dealer we had a tech erroneously signing off on PDI without going through every item. Had a few vehicles come back with issues that would have been avoided had the PDI been done properly.

Needless to say that tech got fired.

There are a few threads on here how to properly check the transmission fluid. Toyota sent out quite a few low from the factory early on (some over 3qts low). Some 2018’s were found to be low on here, but not sure about 2019’s. Been pretty quietly lately.

You have to put the truck into transmission check mode. Tech stream does not properly check the level. It will not be accurate.

The term "sealed transmission" was invented by automotive marketing wizards to account for a lack of a dipstick and imply that it never needs service. Using their logic you could consider my M/T to be a "sealed transmission" as well.

Based on the gibberish they offered you, you should look for another dealership. o_O

Hope they get it working for you, even though I'd make a hefty wager they are not replacing 'all computers'.

I agree with others...Your manager is full of shit. How does a forward facing camera measure vehicle dimensions? How does it even see the width of a wheelbase to determine if you have wheel spacers. There may be ECU parameters matched to the stock track width, but a forward facing camera isn't measuring this directly. I think its more rare to find any service managers who knows anything about vehicles than it is to find ones that don't. I can just imagine the frustration of being a decent tech who knows what the hell they are doing ....and being managed by a total idiot like that.

If I were you, I would ask for something in writing with them stating that your transmission has lifetime fluid. After that, I’d get in contact with Toyota and escalate it from there. That’s some shady business. I wouldn’t be trying to screw the dealer, but they’re screwing people. If they told you that imagine what they tell other people? I would avoid that dealer at all costs bevause it sounds like they’re just increasing chances vehicles they sell will have some sort of failure so they can profit of the people who bring it in. Whoever is in charge of that dealer needs to get the boot.

They should give you a receipt at the end which should have part numbers, you will be able to look up what they replaced.

Stop pedaling BS. There is no transmission filter. There is a screen. Clogging the screen requires a huge effort...

He was right. The fluid is lifetime fluid. It will last the life of the transmission until it fails because the fluid was never changed.

REGUARDLESS THEY DEGRADE, they are typically made of plastic, and a plastic mesh.. some are made of thin steel, or aluminum. replacement is usually advised over cleaning them... because they're typically cheap..

I used the term "lifetime Fluid" and "Sealed Transmission" because that's what Toyota refers to it as. Whether the transmission is really SEALED or the fluid is really LIFETIME is a huge discussion for another day. I'm hoping my transmission is not really damaged and all it is ,is a electronic problem. If any kind of problem comes up that I need a wrecker to tow my truck in the near future, I'll be looking at some other kind of truck.

I'm on my 2nd 2017. Transmission was seriously low on fluid. I pinged the stat and all the other suggestions from Gearcruncher. I ended up getting rid of that truck. Goodluck!

It was just a joke ;-). I bought my X5 8 years ago knowing exactly its reliability claims and here I am ...still own it after 88k.

I bought a brand new 1997 Dodge Dakota (first year of that generation) and I am pretty sure that truck was never on any most reliable list (could be wrong).

I drove it for 19 years and put 200k on the odometer- never once did it not start when I turned the key, never broke down/ left me stranded- a few flat tires though.

Still had the original clutch on the MT.

    So yeah, I understand.

Maybe my Tacoma will break down or leave me stranded some day, who knows? Shit happens.

I will deal with it then.....lol

It would be great to hear from more 18 and 19 owners in the above link.
Its unfortunate that we are starting to hear from a few 18 owners in the last couple pages of that link . Most guys wait until problems occur before they react . By then you may be too late
Toyota still has done nothing to rectify the issue . Its only been 9 years
