    Hi,

Looking for some advice. I am working on wiring my radar detector and dash cam instead of using the accessory (cigarette) plug. I popped the overhead console, the passenger pillar, and passenger kick panel. My thinking is to tap a 12 volt line (see pic below) at the passenger kick panel with and inline fuse and fish it up thru the pillar and headliner and out by the rear view mirror. I pretty good with electronics. 9 years in the Navy as an F14 avionics technician (dating myself). So I'm fairly confident in my wiring skills. However, I not familiar with modern vehicle wiring and read some issues people have taping power and causing code issues.

What do you people think if I tap power as depicted in picture below. See the red arrow. I thinking of tapping the larger red wire which I believe is 12V+ which I will confirm 1st with meter. Ground will be easy to pickup off the ground screw just below.

Any suggestions for other locations to tap. I looked into using the fuse box on the drivers side with an add a fuse tap but I would not be able to put the fuse block cover back on. Also I only have 8K miles on the truck so I don't want to do something the dealer can give me hassle on.

additional thought - I want to tap the wiring to the cigarette lighter but it looks like you need to tear apart a lot of the dash/console to access it.

Radar is low current. Tap the mirror.
Cam, drop a feed from the console power port.

I wrote up both under electronics tread.

Thanks Cudel. I was thinking of using the console wires and thinking the gauge is pretty thin. The camera does use more power than the detector but neither is that much.

A always hot 12v will leave your devices always on. Look for a wire that’s tied into “accessories” so the device is off when the truck is off.

Use add-a-fuse in the interior fuse panel and keep it clean and reversible..

If you use add a fuse in the interior panel the cover can't go back on. I guess that's not an issue really.

Then that gives him an excuse to order the MESO extended fuse cover ;)

Fuse tap off the cig. Then straight up the A pillar and over. That’s how I did my radar detector and dash cam.

Why not just run another wire from the battery? It's not hard.

This is probably the easiest and neatest option I'll probably go with this

Also if there is a meso add a fuse cover that may be a nice finish

That the same i did for both of mine. It has a high amp fuse and if it blows you don't lose anything that can't wait to be fixed if you on the road.

This is an option. however did not want to homerun another hot feed through the engine bay and fire wall for two low current requirement devices.

Yeah, there is that. I'm just a fan of not modifying the factory wiring and keeping all my stuff completely separate. Makes it easier to troubleshoot.

Keeping the wiring stock is my preference for accessories such as these. Probably going add a fuse and up through the pillar to power the devices.

I am also considering adding one of these:

[Updated Version] 3-Socket Cigarette Lighter Splitter,120W 12V/24V Car Power DC Outlet Adapter with 6.8A 4 USB Charging Ports Car Charger https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07G8Y94PJ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_WGpFDbVCNKBXP

I thinking off attaching on passenger side lower center console with velcro and fish the accessory power feeds back up under dash and passenger side pillar to roof console and out to devices. This option provides extra USB charger ports and its a reasonably clutter free install and I'm not modifying any wires.

Hey, OP! Do what CUDGEL said on the 2nd post right after yours! You can probably find one of these specifically for your RD brand. Just tapped in the back of the rear view mirror. Really easy to do without all the messy wiring all over and under panels and consoles etc...
