Sorry, got lost at the crossing of spending 10k+ on a 20 year old brand A and versus brand B.

Lol. 100k is just getting broken in... For a Toyota. Treat these things like shit and they'll last 200k. I beat the crap out of my 86 turbo 4Runner and that lasted 330ish before the motor finally went, coulda just dropped a new motor in it and gone another 300 but I wanted a dirtbike instead at the time.

I'm just kind of confused on why that's a big risk then...

this one popped up near my locale in the central great plains
would a carfax report indicate if it has a replacement frame? I don't see it mentioned in the listing

    https://www.cargurus.com/Cars/l-Use...edium=cpc&utm_source=criteo#listing=234752527

    2oo3 v6 4wd extended cab automatic
    $11,575 --- 119k miles
not sure if that is an 0k price for this model year  (my search has been more focused on the 'vintage' 1st gens) so I don't have much grasp on the current market pricing for this year
if anybody out there looking for something like this I can take a short drive and stick my pinky in the frame, check interior, engine compartment, check for flood damage :( this dealer is maybe 5-10 miles from the mighty MO river (I am sure they kept it safe over the past month)
this says it has had 5 owners, that might cause for concern?

There’s a little damage on the one I’m looking at. I wonder how much it would cost to fix that.

I think it probably wouldn’t. Depends a lot on where it was performed if it was.

Most body shops would probably recommend just getting a new fender I'd imagine.(from a wrecked tacoma etc) Do you really wanna fix that though?

1000 :notsure: 1500 ... that would probably include paint whole fender after they pull it out possibly? (hard to tell) don't know too much about bodywork
maybe you get them to mark price down even further to get that repaired!
is the flair molding damaged too?

    compact? midsize?
    which is it :notsure:

Depends on which era you are comparing to. 3rd gens are definitely midsize when comparing it to an 80/90 Toyota pickup.

You gotta think about these vehicles like houses. Look at the BONES.

I really don't care if a house I'm looking at has new paint in the bedrooms and new kitchen cabinet handles. I care that the foundation and roof are intact. People on those house hunting shows are a like "ew, I hate the paint color, not buying."

I'd much rather go around looking at houses with a home inspector, rather than a real estate agent. The agent is like ooh look at the nice paint. An inspector is like "your load bearing wall isn't properly supported and the electrical work wasn't permitted."

Look at trucks the same way. Is the frame good? The motor? Other stuff, like the fender dent are purely cosmetic. You can easily replace that fender yourself, and if you look around for one in the same color, don't even have to get it painted. Probably $100. Hell, you can probably bang it out yourself and get it close enough that the fender flair would hide most of it anyway (= free!). Some body damage, like roof or other primary body components would be a detractor (to me), but fenders are easy.

Other things, like suspension: I'd probably lift it anyway, so I'd prefer not to pay more for a truck that someone just put new springs on it to make it sell better. Give me the crap springs I'm going to toss anyway.

There was a 1st gen for sale on craigslist a couple days ago with 530k + miles; he indicated it ran perfectly fine.
I believe he was asking around $8k
