for the OP, find the truck you like, if you can afford the price, plan to keep and want to paid that price, then its a good price. It only matters if you think you got a good deal or not.

If you plan to buy, use for a year or so and sell, then you need to get a bottom line price.

when I sell my GX470 and really start looking, my price will be up to $12K and then I will look in that price range and lower, hope I find the truck I want for around $8-10K.

Also, remember CarFax is only good if has been reported, I had a car repaired and completely repainted and it never showed up on CarFax, because I paid for it

I think you're spending way too much there. Nice truck, but $13k is riiiiich... I just paid $7k for a fully documented 2001 v6 4x4 with 193k miles. Gotta leave yourself some room for mods and/or maintenance stuff it might need shortly after purchase.

There’s some good logic here. And if you can find a clean one for $7,000, buy them all day long, every day. I paid more for less miles and solid frames, but these things will always have a support following and you can always bolt in replacement components if/when the mileage does take a toll on you.

your using a truck for a year and a half, it doesn't need to be a low mileage truck then eh, but that first truck close to market price for California trucks with little to no rust.

Not crazy about the 8k deal either.
The way I found mine was through craigslist. I went through a variety of dealers and local owners and ended up paying cash to an owner. Logic will tell you a dealer will be harder to deal with for obvious reasons. They bought the truck for less and they are selling it to you for more. They probably won’t have extensive records or knowledge of the vehicle. You can garner a lot from buying direct from an owner.
In my experience, with a vehicle of this vintage, a dealer just wants to move the vehicle out. They could give a shit about it's history beyond a clean carfax. I looked at 8 1st gen Tacomas before making my purchase. Some were dealers, some were owners. End of the day, I realized my best chances to haggle a good deal was with an owner. Not just for price, but for history as well. My advice? Be patient and wait for the deal to come to you. It will happen. And don't be swindled by a dealer who's marking up shit 100% from where he bought it. BE the dealer and find YOUR deal.

Still way to much for my taste, but if you like the truck then its up to you man. I wouldn't pay more than 6k for it

does anybody know how the KBB works? is it some sort of auto insurance CABAL

...anybody have the actuarial tables (is this what they are called?) they use for valuations? i just feel like the insurance company gonna rape me should mine be totaled beyond repair from what they deem its actual cash value
i would love to see that and compare the other manufacturer's compact trucks from '95 to 'o5 ... see what we are working with

perhaps somebody here has a law degree and can explain options if we ever find ourselves in this sort of situation??/

    Intake, exhaust, lift. Typical stuff.
If totaled, you will generally get about what KBB values though the insurance company don't necessarily use KBB. Cheap companies might use KBB (or Kelly Black Book) or NADA but many reputable companies have their own way of calculating prices.

Either way, if you feel you deserve more, you have to open a civil suit against the person responsible and provide a good reason why you value your vehicle higher than the insurance company did. If you win, the defendant will have to pay the difference. Generally, you lose money on lawyer fees doing this and its only doable if you are able to take enough time off and represent yourself.

One thing you could do is pull up your truck on eBay. Click on “completed listings” and find five or six closed sales with high valuations and present it to them. (If it goes that far. Don’t offer up anything until they give you a number first). Kinda like finding real estate comps in your neighborhood when you’re negotiating with a buyer. You definitely have the right to argue whatever low figure they’ll give u
