A couple weeks ago I got a $500-$800 quote for the peel on the door. The guy explained they need 8-12" from the damage to blend in with the existing paint, and because of the proximity of the peel to the edge of the door it becomes a repaint of the entire door, not just a touch up, and it also is a best effort to match the paint on surrounding panels.

His advise was to just touch it up myself and save the money, and I was going to do that until I saw this thread. Now I want Toyota to fix it.

My wife's white '91 4Runner bakes in the summer, freezes in the winter, the paint and OEM stickers are faded but no peeling. I would probably attribute this to the fact it was made in Japan, not North America.

My '13 DCLB ain't peeling (yet). 60k miles on it, but it is garaged all the time...not sure if it due to the weather elements.

I have a 2012 Tacoma DCSB and the paint is peeling on the hood and some of the other places shown in some of the photos in this thread. I will definitely be contacting Toyota to discuss. Thanks to those that took the time to post about this and share your stories.

Begged & pleaded for Toyota to fix the wife's 2010 blizzard white Rav4, appx. 2015. They said sorry it was out of warranty & they wouldn't help. We told them we had looked it up & could there were tons of complaints about the blizzard white ones, but they wouldn't help. I got it fixed at a local shade tree shop, for cash & he did a great job. Earlier this year we got a notice from Toyota, they will fix it. Also said if we'd had it fixed they would pay us for the repair. There were appx. 5 documents they needed, I know pictures, an itemized receipt, & proof of payment were 3. We had no pictures, we paid the private guy cash (no proof of payment), & no itemized receipt. Really disappointed, they still have all the records of my orig. complaints & phone calls trying to get this fixed, but still wouldn't help. Gosh I really feel screwed by Toyota??!!!!!

Owner of 2014 Super White Toyota Tacoma Limited. Paint is starting to peel. Contacted Toyota and nothing was offered to help me. I only have 58,809 miles on it and it is in great shape. Now with this paint problem, not caused by me, but Toyota, will cause my truck to depreciate in value. Touch up paint jobs will only fix problem temporarily for I'm sure it will peel in other spots in the future. This was my second Tacoma and I have purchased 4 Toyota vehicles in my lifetime. I guess all good things come to an end!

I have a 2010 TRD sport in super white and am having all these same issues. But I figured it’s too old of a truck for them to do anything about it now.

You know the number you posted is some late night call line? hahahaha.... but I will be calling their customer support number ASAP about my issues with my 46k mile 3rd gen. Already started the process with the local dealership but not getting any encouraging words from them-- "out of warranty" "not part of the recognized customer support program" "blahhhh blahhhh blahhh".... I should be hearing back from them in about a week.

What frequency do you guys wash and also wax your vehicle? I’m genuinely curious. I had a white 4Runner that spent its life in FL/GA and never had paint issues but the shine was definitely gone from the PO not waxing. My current Toyota is blizzard pearl and still has a like new gloss to the paint, either garage kept/well waxed, and no chipping issues.

I think if you baby the paint enough you won’t have too many issues. The white Toyota’s are much more brittle I find, when it comes to rock chips though.

My 2014 Super White gets waxed about twice a year and still looks great. I do live in a very dry Northern Nevada climate, but I have no idea if that matters. I had a lot of paint issues with a 2007 black Honda Civic.

If the white Toyotas need more washing & waxing to be kept in nice condition & paint not peeling off, wouldn't it be Toyota's place to tell the folks who buy the white ones if you don't do XXX then the paint may peel off. I totally disagree with this idea.

I agree. I don’t believe waxing will prevent this problem. This sounds more like a paint application problem on some vehicles. My Honda was involved in a paint delamination service bulletin. They had to repaint several sections of the car, even though I took exceptional care of the paint.

Looks like I have this same issue. I had the hood repainted about 10 years ago after snow crushed it. They are repainting the hood for me this week under that warranty because the clear is peeling. I thought what was going on under the hood on the fender was related to that, but they did not spray that area 10 years ago. They said it was the factory paint. I'm trying to see if I can get Toyota to cover all or part of it now. It's $1700 to fix that area, which you can't see. But I'm worried about the rest of the vehicle now.....

Don’t get me wrong, I think the white paints suck as far as durability. The peel on these things is way different than pealing clear coat from lack of waxing. That’s evidenced by peel occurring in weird areas like in the inner fender areas under the hood, or window curvatures.

But washing/waxing regularly seem to keep them in good condition and prevent the peel. Or maybe it just comes down to keeping the vehicle garaged. Toyota’s claim of mechanism behind all this is UV deterioration causing the layers to separate, color from primer. Probably why most people see it start on the roof/hood and skyward facing window areas.

I have a 2005 Blizzard pearl lexus which is an affected color, but paint looks great still. And now I have to keep it that way.

The problem is most manufacturers still don’t use a cleat coat over solid whites. 2 coats of single stage is all they get if your lucky, and usually only one coat on door jams and edges. All the uv protection comes from the clear coats. That’s why they tend to break down and peel on edges and inners first. Pretty sure it’s usually a bigger problem the farther south you go as well. More sunshine, more uv’s. waxes and protectants are only going to go so far on thin single stage paints.

Sorry man, but the Blizzard pearl white Toyota paint is 3 stage paint, base coat, mid coat, & clear coat. Not sure about the Toyota Super white. According to my letter from Toyota these are the only 2 colors affected.

I’m a painter by trade. I’ve seen tons of the solid whites peeling. Not just on Toyota’s. I haven’t seen any of the pearl whites yet though. I have seen some other colours peel in the jams etc. But really rare.
