I'm no painter. I did paid to have my 2010 Blizzard pearl white RAV4 painted a few yrs. back, as Toyota wouldn't help when the paint blew off the roof between the windshield & the sun roof. The body shop talked about how much more it cost to paint the Blizzard pearl white 3 stage paint. The same shop painted the hood for my 2013 Super white Tacoma 4X4 this yr. & was much cheaper cause it is single stage. A little searching on this computer & read that Toyota's metallic paints are all 3 stage & Toyota's non metallic paints are single stage. That being said, Toyota is repainting the ones where the paint is peeling off, no matter if single stage Super white or 3 stage Blizzard Pearl white, no other colors were mentioned.

Could probably get a receipt , they also need proof of payment (I paid cash), pictures of damaged area (Of course no pictures), & one or two more documents ( don't remember now what they were) that we didn't have.

Toyota’s metallic paints are all 2 stage, base and clear. Pearl whites are 3 stage, solid white ground coat, pearl mid coat, and clear. Couple pearl reds are 3 stage, pearl/metallic ground coat, red candy mid coat, and clear. Solid reds and blacks are 2 stage. Pretty sure the only single stages are solid white.

Sorry, I could have read that article wrong, thought it said Toyota's non metallic were single & metallic were 3 stage. Back in context, the single stage Super white (with no clear) & 3 stage Blizzard Pearl white (with the clear) are the 2 colors Toyota is concerned with the paint peeling. That should indicate the clear, blocking the UV rays, isn't what is causing the problem. Of course, just my opinion.

How old was your truck, and mileage.....when they finally helped you.
Mines a 2014 AC, TRD and hit the door at the window with garden hose and spray nozzle- pisser is, the stealership that I ordered my new dc from was going to give me top $$ for it when my new truck gets here.

I hate to hear that @Vorra65 . Make sure to call Toyota Customer support and let them know this happened. I called them again about 2 weeks ago and they told me, again, that they haven't had enough complaints yet to merit adding our Tacoma's to the list of vehicles that they will fix.

Everyone who calls and lets them know what's happening gets us one step closer to getting our trucks fixed!

Keep us updated on what happens.

    Have a good one!

Hey @jbaker1976 I wanted to check in on you and see if your paint was still holding strong?

Worst color is probably the black and dark blues that will start rusting away on the roof

The paint is still peeling off, but the Toyota dealership seems confident that they will be able to repaint my truck soon. This process has taken almost 5 1/2 months, but I do feel that there is a light at the tunnel.

Mine is a 14 and has the peeling under the hood, too. I'll take a chance at getting the dealership to have it repainted. Would save me a lot of elbow grease on the polishing I've been trying to do.

Guess who has a 2016 white peeling truck, and is getting a brand new paint job under warranty next Monday? This guy! Originally submitted my claim at the local dealership in November (40k mile service), called Toyota corporate to file claim soon after, and resubmitted a new claim in February (I think) for some reason... and finally got the call that the claim was approved today. New paint will have a 8 year warranty on it too

You can see the paint physically bubbling and/or peeling off. The paint is also brittle, so they are repainting my hood since it had several small chips in it. The body shop that the toyota dealership uses sent a guy to write up the job and I feel like he was trying to find anything that he could bill toyota for, he even showed me how bad the paint was by taking my seemingly okay passenger door and scraping a small amount off. So now that door is getting done as well...

I can tell why the crease on the fender, under the hood is peeling. It seems the paint did not adhere to the metal where it's creased, so there was an air channel under it. Super easy to tell because if you tap on the crease, the paint literally cracks/flakes off. Once you have a paint flake in your hands...you can tell how thin the paint is. Don't they dip the body panels (rather than spraying) during production?

040 Super White is 2-stage, base and clear coat.

My 2007 Tacoma is painted Super White. The hood has clear coat coming off in large patches on the hood. The clear coat on the top of the fenders is also blistered. The clear coat on the hood and fenders has turned a weak lemonade yellow, most likely due to the extra heat from the engine.

None of the clear coat has been affected on any other part of the truck.

Called Toyota Customer Care and they blew me off, no program to cover that issue.

Generally from what I have read Super White is a single stage in that the clear and white are mixed together and applied.

Has your truck ever been repainted? I assume with it being a 2007 you didn’t just contact Toyota about 14 year old paint?

I'm not sure I understand your question.

If the clear coat is only peeling around the engine compartment, and the base coat is intact, obviously it's a 2-stage paint. Has it been repainted? To that I can only speculate. The previous owner bought it from a guy in MA, in 2010. No accidents.

The whole story is that in addition to the fenders and the hood, the bumper clear coat is flaking off in pieces like hard plastic. The passenger door clear coat is also peeling off in a large swath, though the clear coat on the door and bummer have not yellowed like the fenders and hood have.

Could it have been repainted? It's possible, I suppose. But the previous owner said it had never been in an accident. Carfax only reports what has been reported to it, so no iron-clad guarantee there either. I have all the records of the work that's been done on it as the previous owner was meticulous, and had the dealership handle all repairs and maintenance.

Given what I know of him, and I know quite a bit, he's principled and takes integrity very seriously. Far be it from me to question it.

If your asking whether or not original paint can last 14 years, then come take a look at my 22 year old Mercury Sable wagon. It looks factory fresh and new. Whereas, Toyota has numerous lawsuits and recalls on its paint across many models in addition to the 2nd gen Tacoma.

The Fremont, CA plant where this truck was manufactured used water-based paint instead of oil-based paint due to CA environmental laws regarding VOC and air pollution.

I'll put my money on clear-coat failure from Toyota CA, shafting the consumer with inferior paint quality, and then not owning up to the tens of thousands of complaints across several models.
