I posted the same question few days ago. There were no responses with shortcuts. If you have the tow package (like most) it appears to me you may need to drop the entire bumper to remove the caps without damaging anything.

I'd like to know as well. I'm planning on going aftermarket but I'd like to possibly cover them in the meantime.

Maybe this will help? Haven't even ordered my truck yet and I'm making plans to paint the chrome

I want to replace my silver bumper covers in order to install chrome covers (no sensors). Not sure if only removing the 5 push in clips will remove the cover.

Removing the push pins will not release the cover, and your taking your painted covers off for chrome ones? I just finished plasti dipping my bumper, I just taped everything off. I will try to get photos of it tomorrow.

Yup. Off with painted silver and on with chrome.

No it's not nearly that easy. There are some push tab type things on the back side of the bumper covers. You can't see this from the posted schematic. I believe the front grill or trim ring has some similar type push tabs. I crawled around under mine for a few minutes and decided to see if anyone else has done this with a shortcut without breaking any tabs.

Man, good luck, is all I can say. We had a lot attendant at work back a 15 into a pole and bend the chrome bumper. All our parts department ordered was the chrome metal bumper and all the plastics had to be transferred. Long story short, they broke upon removal.

I will probably drop the hitch and take the entire bumper apart in order to swap the covers. Gen2 bumpers are easy to swap compared to the 3 piece 2016 bumpers. I must have replaced 3 rear bumpers on my gen2 when my daughter was a teenager and was using my truck.

Manny report back when you decide to do that, I am interested in how hard/easy the project will be.

If you have the parking assist rear radar deal, be careful. I seem to recall the manual saying something about messing around back there.

No parking assist on my bumper, but these sensors just snap into place. You need to very careful when removing the sensors during cold weather. The small plastic clips snap with a hard stare during cold weather removal.

I will drop the tow hitch and the entire bumper in order to unsnap/unclip the plastic step plate followed by the bumper covers. As on my gen2, i will chalk mark the location of the bolts on the frame before removal in order to easily align the bumper during reinstallation. One other tip: you need an extra person to easily deinstall and reinstall the bumper. The bumper is too big for one person to handle.

So with that said, i will warm up the Dewalt cordless 1/2" drive impact wrench and get a friend to help me drop and then bench press the bumper into place later this month.

Looks great and I plan to do mine this weekend. Trying to decide if I should spray a coat or two of glossifier.
