Tons! Lots of variety too. Im into the "overland" style of wheeling. But we got lots of rocks to climb.

I put a 96 engine into a 2002 tacoma. The only difference is the intake where the throttle hooks up and the cruise. Also the injector clips are different but you can swap these parts off of your old motor. Thas what i done and have driven it 50k miles since and still running strong

I have a 1997 3.4 v6 and replaced the old motor at 485,000 with a 2004 3.4 v6 motor that had 100,000. Swap was easy, used the 2004 intake with the 2004 injectors, only issue was the injectors clips
but made it work. Everything is pretty much the same and bolts back on including using the original wire harnesses from the 1997.
The 2004 motor is an excellent choice. My 2004 motor has a lot more power on the top end then the 1997 motor. The 2004 motor power wakes up now at 4000 rpms where the 1996 motor would struggle for power above 4500 rpms. Use the 2004 injectors as they are larger and better and replace the knock sensors while your in there and the wires for them.
You can buy oem knock sensors off eBay DESNO New for 85.00 pair and knock sensor wires for 25.00. Photo of the 2004 engine, looks the exact same as 1997 motor.

That was the exact info I was after. Some real life experience haha. Thanks! Next week is the swap. Using my 96 throttle body and accessories. Ever since I blew my spark plug/ coil pack, its been sluggish and way too many oil leaks. 335 Kms on it. Donor motor has 135 kms which is about 84000 miles

Perfect then, what I did when I did this swap was replace all the gaskets on the new motor,
Rear main seal, front main seal, valve cover gaskets, intake gasket, knock sensors, knock sensors wires,
Resurface clutch plate, new clutch, new throw out bearing and pilot bearing, replaced ALL the vacuum
hoses, the water pump, and timing belt and ALL bearing For those areas, new plugs and wires. Use the newer coil packs also.
All this stuff is sooo easy to do when the engine is out and USE all OEM parts.
Will cost a few extra bucks but then your engine will be good for 100,000 more miles till any new work
    will be needed.
2004 engine on the left, 1997 motor on the right ready for swap

Ha! and everyone here thinks you have 500k on your original motor :p

    not that 485 isn't impressive.

Weren't the later year model tacomas starting to use the throttle by wire set up atleast having to do with the tps? Instead of just a plain ole cable running everything? As long as a guy switched everything over it seems there wouldnt be an issue but i was curious about the newer setup creating issues with a swap?

Yes they were, but when you do the swap you use your original throttle body setup, not the throttle by wire, so it's all plug and play with the throttle body and cruise control cables

I use old school math and round up, Haha, your funny, Everyone???? mmm I don't think so, I have posts looking for an engine, post about if I should fix head gaskets or replace engine, the process of replacing the old engine with a 2004 motor etc,
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...89-000-miles-repair-or-replace-engine.397363/

, As we all know from looking at the head gasket issues here on the forum the 3.4 motor will have a head gasket issue around 400,000 -500,000 or so and you will have to decide to fix or replace motor.
Anyway If you followed me you would know, for you and those that don't follow
A year ago I put a 2004 motor that had 100,000 miles into my 1997 and replaced the old motor that had a head gasket leak that had 485,000 miles, I could have fixed the head gasket but with that many miles everyone on the forum convinced me to replace the motor. Everything else is all original, except the motor now pushing 520,000
So here is the strange thing, the 1997 motor used to ping with the supercharger all the time since new and the power leveled off around 4500-5000rmp and was flat in the higher range.
The 2004 motor there is zero pinging, can't make it ping if I try even with the 2.1 pulley and I do not have any fuel upgrades, With The 2004 motor, the power comes on the same but around 4000 rpms instead of flating out it pulls and pulls really hard
all the way to the redline. Is strange because even though these are the same engines the performance differences are huge. I'm wondering if there were company improvements done to the 3.4 engine during those 9 years? The Toyota guy that helped do the swap told me the 2004 motors were much better motors than the earlier motors and had larger valves and a few other things, but not sure if that's true.
My truck now has never had so much power and never run better before with the 2004 motor. BTW I like your blinker conversation idea, will have to maybe do that if I can find a fog light conversion that fits easily
This is the motor 2004 motor I got from a rolled 2004 Tacoma now in my truck

Im just giving you shit man haha

As for if the motor is "beter" then on older one..i can see that maybe.

Ive never heard of the heads flowing better or different valves and such. But the motors did get tweaked with emissions stuff and im sure with the ECU a lot. i have a 96 tacoma and an 03. But couldn't say they run any different. :notsure:

maybe if i hit the 400k mark and need new head gaskets ill measure and find out!

Maybe has to do with the supercharger combo? Don't know but zero pinging now and all types of new top end power, lower rpm power was the same

Maybe the lack of ping in the new motor had to do with the newer pink top injectors higher flow rate.

    Yeah I think they're ~10% higher flow.

Yup maybe, but that would be an easy fix for the ping issues that I would thought someone would have discovered a long time ago. I know they are larger and probably better flow rate and smaller droplet size
