1997 4-Runner: Stopped driving, possible Trans? Please HELP

    My mom has a 97 4 Runner with 147k miles on clock. This is what happened

    She was driving home, RPM's started to jump, check engine light came on, push on the gas, no GO! Vehicle has power, but wouldn't move. Noticed what smelled to be like something burning. Get it home, looks like something is leaking near the oil plan, by the looks and smell it appears to be oil. Checked oil level, very low (Although I didn't let the vehicle run for very long, and I know you are suppose to when checking, however I don't believe it should be that low , im talking maybe 1/4 inch on the dipstick MAYBE). Start it, will go in drive, but not reverse, not sure how fast in drive, as I just nudged it forward, put it in park and rev up the gas, sounds like a rattling/fluttering, sort of sound, hard to explain??

    My first guess is the transmission is shot, but it does go in drive, but no reverse. Possibly blown tranny line, maybe what I think is oil is actually tranny fluid?? ANY and ALL advice on this matter would be much appreciated... Thanks guys!

    Yea, I actually work at a kia dealership, but thats 40 mins away, may have to find something with a trailer and get it there. If I had a Tech scanner thatd help me figure out the CEL, although I'd like to see what everyones feedback here is first, maybe its somethign simple. Highly unlikely, but ya never know

    Those 4Runners are prone to the "Strawberry milkshake". The transmission cooler is integrated into the radiator (including Tacoma's). The cooler develops a pinhole leak and engine coolant enters the mix and bollocks up the transmission.

    Check the trans dipstick for telltale signs of emulsion.

    What exaclty will be mixed with the trans cooler? radioator fluid, oil?

    Uh, coolant is radiator fluid.

    Think radiator inside of a radiator. The trans cooler is an internal component of the radiator. A crack or leak develops and you'll have engine coolant (the radiator fluid) mix with the transmission fluid. Trans fluid does not mix with coolant (emulsion) and will cause serious transmission problems.

    I'll tell you that it takes $6k to replace the transmission on a FJ Cruiser due to water entering and milk shaking it.

    So just had my mechanic scan for codes. P0750(Shift Solenoid). Could it be just as simple as repalcing the solenoid, or is it possible it is showing this code and there is something more serious causing it? As for the leaks, he checked fluid levels and they seemed to be fine, but I know something was leaking??
