I have a 1998 Tacoma that won't start unless the check engine light is on. If the light is not on, it will crank but won't start. Have checked all wires and can't find anything wrong. What would be causing this?

Just how did you check the wires??

unplug connectors and ring them out??

It sounds like a loose connection ?? might be the ECM ground vibrated loose

    Fuses loose in the blocks

    Damage to wires

Since the Mil grounds through the ECM if that is not grounding like it should the other circuits will not operate as well
