    I should have mentioned that I have a manual transmission. Not automatic.

    Drain and fill, with properly spec’d fluid should be harmless. Even for high mileage automatics with sketchy prior service, drain and fill should be harmless, although “flushing” of an automatic by quickie lube places can cause trouble for an aging, poorly maintained tranny. For the record, several drain and fills, with some driving in between, would be necessary to replace most of the fluid in an automatic.
