I'm not sure if you have to but it certainly makes things easier, we do on every truck we put an engine in at the shop I work at.
We usually set them in the bed on fender covers to keep from scratching the paint.

I did. Just makes it easier to deal with. I removed, removed engine, immediately put hood back on. I was doing this shit out on the street so tried making it look like nothing was going on

    pinstripes. lots of pinstripes.
Haven't pulled the 1GR, but with the 7M it was easiest to remove the hood and pull the engine and trans together after dropping the front as low as possible. Trans counterweight helps tilt the engine up and out.

Got to have one heck of a long extension on the engine hoist, to do that on the Taco, without removing the front core support and radiator. I have seen that done before. However, that truck had the necessity of the engine removed and replaced regularly.

I got rods and Pistons in this week I spent some time the garage to weight them out and balance them. High was 1138.1g and low 1137.0g. That a 1.1 g difference. I feel that's damn good for not having to remove any material.

I should state, I went with Molnar rods and street pistons and rings from LCE Performance. The pistons were actually in stock, unlike the other shops that "stated" in stock. lol! I would have loved to put forged pistons in it.

That's really good. Especially considering the rpm limit. Keep up your thoroughness.

As I sit here drinking coffee and waiting for the fog to lift before starting on the truck, I have gone down another rabbit hole. Should I convert to electric fan while I'm doing this project?

deflating your tires will help with removing the engine. the cherry picker wont have to go as high.
why not? i mean the clutch fan does the job just fine. just kinda loud.
will free up a lot of room i imagine without the fan and the shroud.

Once the fog lifted and sun came out, I started to tackle the last of the things needed to pull the engine. Today I just took my time while working. I had to run to the store for longer bolts to mount the engine stand. Got lucky that Lowes had the bolts I needed. When I got back from the store I had to wait till I could get some help to pull the engine. I had to other friend to help spot and watch as I test the tensile strength of everything I forgot to unhook. Kidding, I didn't brake anything on the way out, cause I'm the man. :muscleflexing:
    IMG_20211113_151039.jpg
    IMG_20211113_151049.jpg

After getting the engine out I went to mount it to the stand. "well crap, the stand does not fit between the legs of the hoist".
    IMG_20211113_151512.jpg

Once I finally mounted the engine I gave it a once over and found to oil leaks that were starting.

    IMG_20211113_151823.jpg

    IMG_20211113_151827.jpg

I ended up setting the engine on the ground and had to move the beam out to the farthest position. "Good thing I was already planning to replace the oil pan". :D I had to lay out some plywood so I would be able to roll the stand across the yard and into the garage. I started the disassembly process and decided it was a good place to stop for the night.

The heads will need to come off for machine work on the block. I will most likely send the head out to be refreshed. I have thought of just doing a valve lapping myself, if all is good.

I have never had the valve lapping thing turn out very well.
IMHO it takes some skill and practice that I just do not have. I always seem to use either the wrong cutting compound, or cut too deep, or other wrong things. Have messed up more than one head......

Got off to a late start today. I had to adult and do work around the house. Got a few more parts off including the valve covers.

Turn the engine over and check timing. It looks like I may have installed a cam gear incorrectly on the driver's side.

Enjoying a libation and sustenance as I read this. Put in some good work. That engine is sooo tall. Getting it to clear the drain plug over the core support.....

I imagine that new valve cover gaskets, and others are going back in upon assembly, so those leaks will be good to go.
