I head to the garage with coffee in hand. I start looking over everything again looking for a sign.
I pulled the VVT screens. They both look free of debris. (Sorry no pics)
I was thinking to myself, maybe out loud, "what in the hell, why can I not find a cause of failure." This is kinda going over and over in my head, along with "everything looks real damn good".
The thought enters my head, "the only time I have seen oil that bad and the engine not blown up was when a catalytic converter failed." My immediate next thought, almost before the first was finished. "NAHHHHH, I just put new high flow cats on when I did the shorty headers, less than a year ago." As I turn to look at the cats, "well fuck it, I can't think of anything else so why not." I look at the bottom of the cat, looks ok. I walk over and grab a bite scope and I start feeding it down the exhaust runner and I start twisting it a round looking at the monolith. The fist one looks good. Move on to the second one. Bottom looks good. Slide the scope down to look at the top. As I'm rotating the camera around I see something.....off. I start repositioning the camera and I see it. Well, what's not there. " GAWD DAMN FUCKING SHIT ASS MOTHER FUCKER MY LIFE SLUT!!!!!!

Well, this has turned out to be $3500 mis diag. Well, I can't say misdiagnosed. I just caught it before she went nuclear.
With all that cat dust in there it would have acted like a super fine grinding paste. It would have continued to get worse and worse.
A little info for those that may not understand how that could get into the oil.
The trucks do not have EGR, why? That function is incorporated in to the VVT strategy and cam timing. It will draw a little exhaust back into the engine through the valves instead of pumping it into the intake like a traditional EGR.
As the exhaust is drawn back into the cylinder it brings the catalytic converter dust with it. From there the normal blow by and sticking to the oil cylinder walls to be scraped off.

Well, now I'm looking at another $1000 or so for cats. Just to chop off the manifold part. Lol!:bananadead:

With this information we all have closure for the failure!

Holy begeezues! That was not expected. Wow. Very good deduction!

You're right. Any longer and that would have completely worn the internals raw. Lol.

Perfect time to get a fresh start and have an even better running engine than before.

Were those aftermarket cats? If so, which ones?

Had a friend come over recently, to diagnose a strange exhaust noise. His OEM cat had not more than ~10% of free flowing area. Any time he revved the engine the exhaust pushed the flanges w/ spring bolts apart to let the exhaust out. Lol.

    Crunched it all out. GTG.

They are G-sport by GESI. They should have been gen 2 epa certified.

Going to post these photos in here for fun. Since it is related to engine tear-downs. The engine life, after disowning the thrust bearing.

Machine work on the heads, witch I just dropped off. Then the machine work on the block.
Side note on that: the shop I dropped my heads off at told me they don't need to line the block. They just bore it out.

Is there something I'm missing? Or just don't let them touch the block.

Wow, better than a who dunnit murder story.

Had no idea that was even possible as an issue. Congrats on it, and yeah its not time wasted as this saved you from replacing a whole engine later.

You're having sleeves installed, yes? Not the Darton MID ones, but regular sleeves?

If so, have them check the line before and after. If it is still in spec with what it is currently, then it's good to go, since you are changing the crank. That's the simple way to look at it.

    Does it hurt? Never.

The center line for the crank journals? Is that what you mean?

Yes, just regular liners pressed in. The Darton mid sleeves were 2-3 months out minimum. The crank will be reused. I'm just to to have it balanced since the new rods and pistons are about 8 grams lighter for each cylinder. (made a mistake weighing and had to re weigh)
I don't think there is 8 grams on carbon on the old setup.
