To make sure the block is even salvageable?

Can the shop check for this? I thought one could resurface with a thicker head gasket.

The service manual for 1GR-FE vehicles specifically states if warpage of block is greater than 0.0020”, replace engine block. If the machine shop cuts too much, you could have problems.

The machine shop could definitely check for you. You can ask if they have done 1gr-fe before and what the outcome of those jobs typically are. I would just play it safe and apply new gaskets if the warpage is still within spec. My current engine on the 05 Tundra, according to car fax, had a head gasket job done before I bought it. Im pretty sure they must have resurfaced the heads and left the old timing chain components in it with 330k miles of wear and I was left with a truck with misfires at idle, low power and a leaking timing cover.

You’re engine only has 3k miles remember.

Cometic makes thicker head gaskets. Many of us have done this.

block saved. I checked myself with straight edge/feeler and had machine shop double check me. does not exceed spec of 0.002"!

to anyone following this thread in the future. Avoid the silicon brush. Was an old technique no longer used. machinist said one of his most common reasons for re-decking on backyard mechanics/DIYers is this darn brush. Through it away! he said.

Currently looking at engines because mine decided to leak all its out of the fumoto valve and get a little toasty... Does anyone know the compatibility between 4runner, FJ or anything else? Mine is a 2005 6 speed 4wd, any differences that wont allow install if I purchase a motor from a automatic and swap parts from my motor, such as the bolts that the tranny mounts to the motor with?

Maybe it was this thread or another one but consensus was that non-taco engines are different enough that one should not get a non-taco 1grfe on a taco.

2005-2007 or 2008 4Runner. As long as it is single VVT-I. 2007-2009 FJ Cruiser. 2005-2011 Tacoma. ‘12+ requires swapping valve covers and a few other minor things.

Okay... So I received my engine about a week ago and just got it in today. The listing online that I ordered it from said ''07 Tacoma, 62K miles''. Knowing that these differences where important, I specifically made sure that it was from a Taco. After getting the engine in today, me and my father noticed a VIN tag on the side of the motor. Being curious we entered in the VIN into a decoder and it specifies that it is out OF A 4RUNNER. The first digit of the vin is kind of scratched, so we made a guess that it is a J, we are going to take a look at it tomorrow and try to figure it out... Any way visually we can tell if it is dual VVTI vs single???

If it is an 07 T4F, then it will drop right in.

    Still thinking about it.
Dual Vvti would require different wiring, I figure. Did all your connectors hook up as they should?

Well. Nothing in this swap has gone as it should, and it recently just got worse. After getting the ''new'' engine in on the motor mounts, I spotted a vin tag on the side of the motor, out of curiosity I decided to look it up. After a quick carfax, this motor shows 140K MILES. The one that my dad supposedly ordered has 60K. After a quick call to the place where it was ordered from, they said they forget to mention that it had a ''recent rebuild''. Sounds like a huge freaking scam to me. The only thing that has me convinced at all is how clean the rear main seal is with no sign of any leaks at all. I asked the company for documentation of the rebuild, receipts and the shop that did it. If they can not provide me with this information or if it isn't sufficient, that motor is coming back out and getting sent right back.
