Yes, that's a problem. That engine didn't come out of a Tacoma and won't work in a Tacoma.

@Muddinfun, as I recall @lucky swapped engines between 07 and 09. Didn’t dual VVTI came out in 09 engines? I wonder if lucky had any issues. I might have to switch out parts from the old engine, I recall reading a tread somewhere here. Fingers cross.

Dual VVT engines are in the 10+ FJ, and '9 or '10+ 4Runners.

As long as you purchase a Tacoma, it will swap in. Some external parts may be to be swapped to match how yours came. No biggie.

A few more words added to make this more clear.

Dual VVT engines are in the 10+ FJ, and '9 or '10+ 4Runners and so far we don't know if anyone was successful in swapping into a Tacoma.

As long as you purchase a 4.0 Tacoma engine, it will swap into any '05-'15 Tacoma. Some external parts may need to be swapped to match how yours came if you swap a '12-'15 engine into a '05-'11 Tacoma. No biggie.

Yes, I put an 09 in my 07. They were identical. The 09 had a mere 1200 miles on it when I got it. No issues at all, everything bolted and plugged back up perfectly - no hacking of anything.

Its almost impossible to hook it up wrong. All the wiring and connectors have just enough slack to reach the place they need to be connected. I recommend you take some pictures anyway - all the vacuum lines can get a little confusing.

    1. Is it better to use the donor engine wire harness? Or use my old wire harness.
I used my existing harness. At the time I did the swap, my truck had around 80k miles on it. All wiring and connectors were still in good shape, not brittle or cracking, so I used what I had. I didnt have the entire donor truck anyway - just engine, minus intake, harness, ecu.

    2. Any issues with the dual VVTI? Being my truck (2006) is single VVTI.
    answered

    3. Do I have to replace my 2006 ECU with 2010 ECU?
With my swap being an 09 going in an 07, I didnt - plus as noted above, I didnt have the 09 ecu anyway. If you have the 2010 ecu, I say use it. Put the 06 one on the shelf as a spare or sell it here - it will likely go quick. If you really want to get the most out of your new-to-you engine, I would recommend flashing which ever ECU you end up using with a good tune - ala HPTuners.

I too completed a swap on my tacoma. 2011 Tacoma engine went into a 2005 Tacoma. However, after completing the swap, I have yet to hear it run. engine has 80k miles when pulled. I’m getting these codes: p0121, p0123, p0102, p2135 and p0113. I tried swapping out the air mass sensor from one I bought off of eBay for about $13 (kind of suspicious of that) but it didn’t change anything and I don’t want to throw parts at it. Anybody ever have this issue? Plenty of spark, fuel and compression but it’s a dead no start

@NewTacoDude, my engine is in transit right now. I most like will encounter the same issues you are having. The engine is from 2010 Tacoma to 2006 Tacoma. I’m interested to know more from your experience and I will also post mine here as I go with my engine swap.

I just had mine swapped last weekend, I still have to do the electrical wirings. I did it with the occasional help from my 17 y.o son I used the 2T hoist from HF, the 1T has not enough reach. And while at it, I also rebuilt the alternator and flush the PS fluid.

@toyotaman29, in my case I pulled it out to make the load lighter and have more room. I should have leave it. I remove the oil filler extension for safe keeping as the donor engine arrived with broken oil filler. Hope this help. You need to replace those metal gasket in between the manifold and the engine block and also the manifold and the down exhaust. These gaskets are suppose to be single use only.

@T3d In the 1st pic in post #114, the left engine has the engine oil cooler for the towing package. The right one does not. Since the right one has plastic plugs, I'm assuming that's the replacement engine. Did you transfer the engine oil cooler parts over to the replacement engine?

Yes I did, the donor engine came with no oil cooler.

@toyotaman29, your welcome. I did my engine with guidance from members in this forum. I’m more than happy to share my experience.
