just curious, but has anyone tried to swap the 5vz alternators regulator onto this alternator to get the orientation correct?

I just used a Lexus alternator from the junk yard I saw in a pile. The pulley is wider by 2 rows but is plug and play..

Literally replaced my alternator last week with an 80A unit, and then I found out about this now. Would've saved me $20 and gotten more juice!

Never did get around to doing this. Remembered and had to search for the thread.

Price has crept up ever so slightly (+7 for alt and increase in shipping) but all good. Order placed.

@Speedytech7 did you get this done? Interested to see how you wired from the alternator to the battery and from the alternator to the fuse box.

Sounds simple enough but i did the big 3 years ago and bypassed something off a CS144 GM alternator and it overcharged my battery, scary situation coming out to look at my truck after a drive to work to feel an AGM battery swell and be hot to the touch

I have it wired with 4 awg to the fuse box from the alternator then 4 awg from the fuse box to the battery now, things work fine but making the alternator more efficient would be good

Not a Taco owner, 3rd gen 4Runner, just replaced my dying stock Denso Alternator with the Grand Vitara DENSO2100461, so far stoked on it. But now I have this spare Denso sitting around, can't send to Rock Auto for core return. Anyone in NorCal want a free alternator? If it needs be shipped that's on you.

My alternator just started to die. Will be replacing asap. Found this thread. Debating if I should use this 105 amp alternator instead of a stock 80amp alternator.

I have no winch and no plans for a winch anytime soon, as much as I would love one, not in the budget for a couple years probably.

So here's my deal, I get that it could be beneficial to have a bit more amperage from the alternator.
I definitely see the benefit to upgrading some wires to make sure nothing starts a fire with too much apmerage going through too small of a wire.

Currently my brain is pretty maxed out building a house for myself. So as ridiculous as it seems, it feels like just a bit too much to deal with the wiring aspect here.

Can someone convince me that I should spend an extra hour researching the wire upgrade and then go that route? Is it really worth it given that I only have stock accessories. Or should I just slam in a new stock alternator and get on with building my house?

If someone tells me how to make my headlights brighter I will do that in a heartbeat! (I saw some references here to a wiring upgrade that would allow a bit more current to get to the headlights I think).

Thanks everyone. I love this forum a bit too much, so fun to see everything everyone is doing and really I need to get back to working on my house today!

The Big 3 wire upgrade is extremely easy to both make yourself (if you have tools) and to install. The alternator in thread was $162.17 of which $30 is core, but I was unable to return due to it not being the exact same alternator as what they sent me. I think I spent about $50 for cable cutters and heavy duty crimper, copper end pieces, had the cable lying around. I drilled out the threaded bit of the alternator with a 5/16 bit, stock yota locking bolt slid right in. And the above mentioned slight dremeling of some metal on the alternator bracket.

Anyone here have issues with voltage drop when you put it in drive at idle? I installed the alternator and it worked great running at 14.2 all the time. I then did the big 3 up grade. 2 gauge from the alt to the fuse box, 2 gauge from the block to the negative and 10 gauge from the fender to the negative, also 2 gauge from the block to the firewall. And now if I’m driving it’s 14.2 and in park it’s 14.2 but if I put it in gear and let it idle it drops to 12.9-13.4. Really confused

Just a different engagement RPM. You could change the pulley size, but it shouldn’t really cause any issues

But why was it giving me 14.2 before upgrading the wires? Shouldn’t the larger wire have less voltage drop?
