Has anyone tried to put a reverse camera on the tailgate? does anyone know if the tailgate handle from 2nd gen with reverse camera would fit on a first gen tailgate?

the handles are different so they won't be interchangeable.

you can buy a decent license plate mounted camera from fleabay or ama

I looked into this when I was installing a camera. There really isn't a lot of room behind the tailgate handle to put something (on either side). It would require drilling through the metal of the tailgate behind the plastic part of the handle. It would be a completely custom job.

Since I was installing one because I couldn't see through the topper that I just got, I ended up putting it above the topper window.

Someone actually did do just that, drill through the sheet metal.

Any more info about that? I tried license plate mount and It was good for checking who is driving behind you but no information about parking distance from corners. My topper is to much slanted forward to see the bumper. For now I just put a camera into trailer receiver plug but it is till I find a really perfect solution. The place under the tailgate handle is perfect when combined with true 180 degree camera - 180 degree side to side not across like the angle is described for most cameras. I have esky 170 degree camera but the true angle side to side is more like 150 degree. To see both corners you need 180 side to side.

I had a lot of trouble finding a good wide angle camera. I have mine mounted at the top of my topper and I can’t see the corners of the bumper but I marked them with the guidelines that are built into the camera.

backup cameras are not meant to be full visibility views of the rear or sides. they are meant to assist in judging distance to the "rear" of the vehicle.

you may want to look for something else as most "backup" cameras will be limited in FOV due to this reason.

also mounting it to the cap/topper/camper makes it kind of a necessity to leave it on full time. I generally take mine off for summer.

The way mine is mounted gives me a birds eye view for when I'm parallel parking. I'm sure I would have backed into many cars by now without it.

I also wired it with disconnects at the rear corner if I need to remove the topper.

    EDIT:

Here’s my Alpine backup camera fitted on my tail gate handle. The headunit is the 8” Alpine INE-Z928HD and the camera is a Alpine HCE-C117D:

Sorry I do not. It was actually installed by my local car audio installers when I purchased the headunit and the backup camera.
