Morning y'all! I'm hoping that someone in here has knowledge to confirm or correct my train of thought. I have a complete and totally stock axle from a 2012 TRD off-road that I'm trying to sell. My wife's cousin has a 2010 4x4 4banger and he wants to buy it from me but I initially told him it won't work because he has 4.10 gears in the front and for the cost to buy my axle and have it regeared he might as well get an ARB locker... now I got to thinking, what if he just pulls the third out of my axle, sells it and finds an elocker third with 4.10 gears from a first generation Tacoma? I believe both have 30 spline axle shafts and the mounting flanges are the same... sooooo... it SHOULD work. Am I missing something?
    Thoughts?
    Thanks!

Is the flange that connects to the drive shaft the same?

They are not interchangeable from 1st to 2nd gen

Because they are different. The 1st gen elocker uses an 8" diff and 2nd gen uses the 8.4"

I think he is asking if a 1st gen e locker third will fit into a 2nd gen e locker housing?? Right..?

Yessir! I think it should. Only thing I'm not sure about it the yoke flange that goes on the axle shaft...

That is what I mean, axles have the same spline, flange on the pinion is the same for the driveshaft, but it looks like you would have to modify the housing, it would not be a bolt in fit. I have no idea what you mean with the flange on the axle shaft. I have a 1st gen elocker if you want to try it :)

    They're identical. I have a 2nd gen 3rd in my truck.

I misspoke. I meant the drive shaft flange. But you are still missing the point. Not trying to fit the elocker third into the so-called 8.4" housing. Read OP again!

Awesome!! No modifications required at all? What about the drive shaft yoke?

3rd member is the same, was just questioning myself about the pinion flange however.

When I regeared my '01, I had to buy a new flange being the pinion had 29 splines and stock was like 27. Don't know if that means the bolt spacing is different.

Right, well looks like project is a go! I got a local guy offering his 4.10 3rd from a 2003. Guess I'll count splines and see if I need the different yoke at all. I will also give East Coast Gear Supply a call and see what they think

Why would I need this if the 4.10 elocker diff I'm buying already has 29 splines on the pinion?
My concern is mating the pinion from the first gen diff to the 2nd gen drive shaft.

Does anybody know the spline count on the 2005+ non elocker pinion gear? And is it different between V6 (3.73 gears) and 4banger (4.10 gears)?

I still don't know if the driveshaft bolt patterns are the same. All I was saying is you could only use that flange if you got a 1st gen diff with a 29 spline pinion.

Gotcha. But if you did the opposite of what I'm looking into (2nd gen diff into 1st gen axle housing) and it bolted up to your drive shaft then the opposite would be true for me, right?
