I bought my 02 double cab last summer. I didn't know much about these trucks at the time. Just always loved the look of them. Anyway, the guy told me that he had Toyota tell him the frame was ok and didn't need a recall. But had it reinforced... I'm pretty much Screwed if anything happens right? Or should I be contacting Toyota to try and get the "reinforced" one replaced? It has started to rust some. From what I understand it has been sprayed every year since it was reinforced.

First gens only qualify for the frame replacement if they were inspected and coated by Toyota prior to the 2011 deadline. If you made the deadline, then you have 15 years from the build date of your vehicle to get the frame replaced IF Toyota inspects it again and deems it unsafe to drive.

So right now, only 2002-2004 first gens would qualify for the replacement program, assuming they had been inspected/coated prior to 2011

Oh and you have to live in one of the specific states that Toyota named in the program, pretty much any state with harsh winters that uses salt on the roads during winter I think.

actually, sorry guys...I didn't realize this was in the Canada section. What I posted before applies to 1st gen frame replacement program for the US, I'm not sure what the program for Canada was like. It may have been the same, may not have been.

no worries ,when i found out mine needed a frame like i said i called toyota about it and they told me they weren't doing 1st gens anymore (under the recall anyway) i could still probably have them do it for me but id probably have to pay the amount of a brand new truck

Yeah I remember a member on here posted the invoice for his frame replacement through the Toyota recall program, he owed nothing of course but the invoice stated that the frame job was something like $12,000

Best bet would be to either find a donor truck with a clean frame to do your own swap with, or try to repair/patch your current frame depending on how bad it is.

One dealer said it wasn't covered , but it had been inspected in 2009 and undercoated at the time by Toyota and the warranty had been extended to 15 yrs after mfg date.
So I went to another dealer and just got my 2003 back from the dealer Kentville Toyota with a frame replacement , had been waiting for the frame since June 2016.
Optioned to put on power steering lines , upper ball joint , proportioning valve linkage that had been removed , cost $1500 ( parts ,labour, shop supplies, tax), which wasn't in the list of warranty parts.
But frame , new springs , lower control arms etc no charge for ~ $6000 worth of parts , and ~$6000 worth of labour.
PS lines from Toyota was ~$1000 from Toyota , got from napa for $400 , but couldn't get linkage from napa , which they charged $580 from Toyota , labour $230 , various other parts not covered.
If yours is approved , get a list of parts that are needed which aren't warranty , before it goes in for work , and try to source yourself , or the dealer will likely say they can't wait and they need to get from Toyota , who have inflated prices.

If a frame is welded , I've heard that it has to be done by a certified welder , body shop , for it will pass safety check. Not sure , but your work could be for nothing.
