Can you swap out the outer portion of a cv axle.. the joint that goes into hub?

I'm just wondering if I can pull the outer joint from a manual cv axle and swap it onto my ADD axle

That way I could have OEM axles and OEM joints... if I could still buy outer joints that is

    Uh, why?

The axle hubs on your spindles only accept one type of axle; the axle hub with a collar and snap ring is meant for manual hubs and the one that uses a 34mm socket is meant for ADD axles.

Be a lot of work just to take two axles and try to piece them together as some sort of hybrid.

That's a good question, I hate to assume it but I'd assume that the inner axles are identical and only the outer stubs are changed for the ADDs and what not. At least on manufacturing end of it, I think that's what Toyota would have done

I'd assume the same on the inside considering the diff is the same for both vehicles, and plenty of people use different diff tubes on the passenger end when converting from Prerunner to 4x4.

The shaft on the ADD axle is thicker though isn't it?

I think so, I haven't paid too close attention to the CV axle differences, but I do remember folks specifically saying the outer stubs are thicker on the non manual lock hubs axles.
Yeah I think you're right. They gotta be interchangeable. That cool then, one could piece good OEM shafts together since you can't get new ones. Even OEM remans aren't available anymore right?
I gotta reboot one of mine this summer. Fingers crossed the cv joint and all that has remained in solid shape so I only have to boot it

If you wanna let me have the worst one, I'll take it.

Still plan on heading out to Orange County to drop off a bin of parts this coming Monday.

As @Empty_Lord suspected, @eon_blue bought the last remans from Toyota just last year.

He keeps tearing boots yet insists on buying more CVs instead of replacing the boot

Oh damn that's coming up, yeah let me know when you come through here...still got that skid plate taking up space in the backyard if you have room for it lol.

I have a few busted boots aftermarket axles, one Napa axle that's practically new but got cross threaded by my dumb ass, and one OEM axle with a busted inner joint. The OEM one is the only one I wanna keep though, that core is actually worth something.

way easier to just replace the CV, plus I don't think anyone has ever rebooted a parts store axle before lol. That would be silly

OEM one would definitely be reboot worthy
