    @Black DOG Lila

    It's so hard to tell when your serious but you asked a question I love to answer and have had to do so many times its rehearsal is second only to my small engine ethanol speel

    For the sake of keeping this post shorter than it can be almost all small 4stroke engine decompression valves regardless of manufacturer function with this principle:

    (This is the camshaft In your intek motor)IMG_2008.jpg
    The mechanism on the base of your camshaft is spring loaded and the pin you see to the left (in normal operation) rides at the top of the lobe in order to keep the exhaust valve lifted only during start up to make it easier. The tension on the spring is such that after it starts and is spinning at full operational rpms the weight of the mechanism flings the pin out of the way and the exhaust valve can close completely.

    The reason I attached that particular picture is because some wahoo at Briggs decided for cost cutting measures they'll do away from casting then grinding the lobes as a complete cam and instead turn and spline the shaft and press the cams on after the fact. I've had to warranty countless camshafts because some monkey at the factory would assemble the cams just a few splines off and the exhaust couldn't decompress and the under powered starters wouldn't be able to overcome the initial compression stroke

    Here's a picture of an older style engine that shows the decompression mechanism better as well as what a quality cast and ground camshaft should look like.

    @cruiserguy I know you'll get a kick out this info as well

    back in the 70 and 80s for American made small engines the decompression function was taken care of by an extra little nub on the tip of the exhaust lobe and sure that allowed it to start much easier but it was always open so they really polluted like a 2 stroke. Honda came along in 84 (... I think?) And changed the small engine game completely!

    Dude that's great, very well written. Decompression valve is the word I couldn't remember. I read about it when I was looking up adjusting the valves for that Honda washer engine. I still don't grasp it entirely but have a much better picture of it....
    But bruh the cams are set in place with those splines and a set screw?!?! :eek:
