I think the only reason this thing has survived this long is that it was always in fresh water. Someone kindaaaa took care of it before. They changed the gas tank and the floor in 1997. The bellows on the outdrive look fairly new. Transom has zero play in it which makes me happy.

But they also kinda neglected it, I drained Vanilla Frostee out of the engine. The outdrive oil was brand new though.

 

A frostee has some thickness, you just had Hint of Oil flavored water in the case

 

Are you gonna run her for years till the transom goes rotten?

 

It was IKEA Swedish Meatball gravy consistency, it is a Volvo after all.

 

Replace every fluid with Rotella T6

 

Till I have space to park a bigger boat or money to buy a better one it’ll do for now. I bought it to fish. It’ll do the job fine.

Down the road I want something big enough to take on the SF Bay and maybe do some inshore fishing. Maybe a 25 footer.

 

Does that help? Manual says it takes 10W40 for the motor and the outdrive.

Rotella T6 works in anything. It's the official wunderoil. I run it in all my vehicles.

If 10W40 is good then full synthetic 5W40 can only make things more gooderer

 

I’ll run what’s in it for a while till it’s time to change it. I’m still trying to see if I have a HG leak, I dunno how that milkshake happened. I’m ready to change the gaskets - I bought a kit for it.

I just threw the cheapest Dino oil Autozone had. Heard you’re not supposed to run Synthetic in older vehicles.

 

I would agree, it would be best to keep clean conventional in it.
