Yeah, I don't get the long interval, I understand the thin oil though helps them meet emissions standard by reducing internal drag. Probably a large difference too (over x amount produced) with the relatively small torque number the engine produces. But I'd take not burning it and not fouling up my cats over the ~1mpg any day.

Lots of people build K series engines for huge power... the consensus seems to be the engine is pretty loose from the factory, even stock ring gap they take boost with a grain of salt. So I see no reason they cant running a heavier oil too.

@Blue92, does yours have the notorious cold start timing/oil pump chain rattle?

Yup. And I have yet to get the mpg to where factory claims it to be which is 33 hwy. Best I could do is 31 running premium, 29-30 on midgrade. My commute is 100% hwy by the way. Factory recommends premium, but I havent had any pinging on name brand midgrade so I tend to use either.

It adjusts timing based on the knock sensor, you'll never hear the knock. It'll get a slight vibration and immediately turn down to suit lower octane fuel, you just lose some performance and economy from running less spark advance.

Oh the Vtec actuator rattle? I heard it do it once after it sat for a few days and we had a bit of a cold snap. Never heard it again though, and its been much colder since. Some people say thicker oil helps prevent that too. Not really a huge issue until it goes on for a long time.

Yeah, AZ can see lots of dust, like what we had in Moab. Even driving around trails solo and there's a ton of dust. $135 and I can seal it up better than what they provide the parts for. And this one being low-pro, doesn't stick out as much as a traditional snorkel. Looks pretty good with it sort of hidden by the rack on that guys 4R.

Yeah, that's my thought too. I have his plans for building a low-pro roof rack too.

Can't wait to get a rack, just waiting to knock out other things first since I have no big camping trips coming up.
