The upper line you’re holding should be the “send” line. Assuming it traces back to the transmission as the upper line. So yeah goes to aux cooler, rad cooler, to the lower return line.

Another thing I remember is B&M saying to put the inlet to the trans cooler as the lower fitting. And the outlet as the upper. At least when mounted sideways.

Side mount, top nipple should be going out?

That'd make the fluid have to work its way up and out the aux cooler...which would minimally slow flow?

 

From what I understand it was something about air getting trapped in the cooler. Apparently either way is fine after doing some research. Not sure why B&M says that in the instructions.

We run our hydraulic coolers that way.. yes it minimally slows the flow, but the longer it stays in the cooler, the more heat that can get sucked outta the fluid

 

Makes sense.

My train of thought was lack of any real pressure, which would make it slightly difficult to flow up and out the cooler.

I stopped for today as I decided to run new coolant and burp the system. Means everything is now hot and I'd rather not pull transmission lines until the 4R is cold.

Just need to go buy some transmission line, and hook everything up another day.

I couldn't get my thermostat housing off though, at least not without loosening the bracket holding the alternator to release tension on that belt (didn't bother to try today).

I'll do this another day as well with the 4R cool; the belt gets in the way to get a socket wrench in there to get any real leverage on those bolts.

I suspect the thermostat's jiggle valve is in the 12 o'clock as while sitting idle and letting the system burp, it reached 198 degrees in the half hour it was running. The Tacoma never got that warm (ok maybe once) even while off roading or driving uphill.

 

hm yeah 198 makes it sound like it might not be in the right spot. I don't see anything over 190 unless pulling up a long highway grade.

If the t-stat is in the right place and all, maybe the fan? Not sure all that you've done yet if the fan was part of it, but since it's getting hot while sitting still that would be my next guess.

She doesn't get neglected, much like my cat though she gets approximately 96% less attention than she used to

 

That was getting back into it after almost 3 hours sitting in the sun. As I started driving it came down to a brisk 104°.
