I pretty much treat anything 3rd gen i5 and up as useable. Just bought a new battery for an 8 year old machine that I only use to play Minecraft on occasionally lol..it runs linux

I did that with moving recently; just left Salinas 2 days ago.

Got rid of a ton of stuff but kept nice keyboards, mouse, etc. in the event that someone else can benefit from it.

I found the receipt via Best Buy online and that's when I saw how inexpensive it was (and how old).

    Yeah that's what I'm thinking.

Found old tuning logs for the Focus ST; also found a ton of pics of my old dog. Miss that little fluff ball :(

 I ran a 3770K at 4.2-4.5Ghz for years - that was my first major build and subsequently upgraded. Then I traded for a non-K to get VT-D capability as I was shifting to more servery and virtualization things.

Now I just use work laptop haha

I still have one, overclocked to 4.1 and undervolted, barely even gets warm

How on earth are you able to undervolt and overclock?

Oh maaan you were a quad user

I spent my money on dual cards instead.

I remember flexing that ribbon cable for SLI when it was first a thing.

But yeah those Q were the first quads right?

It's binned well, would be a great candidate for even more overclocking. Having stable VRMs is important, a voltage dip on an undervolted unit is begging for instability.

Yeah I bought a server for my servery things, the i7 is pretty much just photo editing and games now.

all my laptops are pretty old. I’m looking hard at a new thinkpad yoga, a pen for photo editing on the go would be awesome

I had the first AMD quad core, the Phenom X4 and a 9800GT and thought I was badass with my 4gb of ram. That was my first build entirely of new parts.

I wasted money on dual 6850s cuz I thought crossfire/SLI was the coolest thing. Was terrible in practice, glad its gone.

I recently shifted everything worth keeping into an enclosure integrated into my table/desk. It's going to be an Emby server/virtual pinball machine/home office desk. Pretty happy with this consolidation so far and it beats the full ATX case I've had since high school. The server aspect is functional - I run via Server 2016 and hyper-V an old HP RAID card in HBA mode passthrough to TrueNAS - working with 24TB now.
Problem is my old RAID 5 array got corrupted somehow in two different ways so now I'm looking at repairing the PCB on one of the drives so I can recover my 5TB of data, then I can add that in plus another 8TB of drives once I get a long enough SAS breakout cable.

yeah, I'm not sure why I chose it. I want to say a game I was playing at the time needed the extra cores :notsure:

IIRC it was 2 core2duo cores on one chip

    what were ya playingback then?

When I sold the K sku a couple people asked about what voltages it ran at, but I had no idea there were bins that good. Crazy.
Getting 4.5GHz was not easy if I remember correctly. I had a custom water cooling loop that I ran with a handmade acrylic case, a small pond pump, and a junkyard heat exchanger offset outside the back panel of the case (watercooling wasn't as readily available as it is today - and it was expensive for customized parts), so cooling was taken care of, but voltages were somewhat high I remember.

Sounds like a project! Should be pretty cool when it’s done.

I just wanted something reliable I could park in a back room and forget about. 12 cores of low power xeon and 192 gb of ram on freenas with 2 3 tb zfs mirrors and 2 offline backup drives. I can boot it remotely and it’s setup to backup all my cloud services locally. Love it
