Ahh an SE 5MT -- Looks like a Stillen kit. Somebody had built it back in the day. Looks like a Catman stainless y-pipe. I replaced all the bushings and fixed the oil leaks on my two 4th gens years ago. They've been low maintenance and no trouble for years. People create oil leak problems by smearing RTV on the VC contact surfaces were they shouldn't. The black 99 model is an SE 5MT. I converted the maroon 98 GLE to have the SE suspension upgrades.

There is a suspension mode that I developed for these things that uses some delrin bushings from a Titan and poly from a Subaru WRX that makes a najor handline improvement.

As for the rear axle, its not solid but a flex torsion beam (covered in some sheet metal) with arms that twist depending on rear wheel angle. A Scott-Russell link is used between the body and the torsion beam instead of a conventional Panhard. It seems wonky until you understand how it works. An Addco rear sway bar with some Koni struts and H&R lowering springs brings it to life.

Is it me or did they always spec the maxima with springs that were way too weak, like they're always sagging. Put a wet napkin in the back and its on the bumpstops

IIRC there were 4 different spring rates for the 4th gen series depending on package and transmission type. THE SE 5MT had the better handling stock springs. Generally, I think the springs were a bit soft to give them an easy ride when new.

I think many were sent to an early grave with low cost coilover kits that made them ride and handle terrible.
