This was my project from 2 weeks ago.

Mind you it's ugly as hell cause we weren't allowed to use a band saw or miter saw to cut anything, only oxyfuel.

Students had the choice of either MIG welding their project or stick welding; I obviously chose to stick weld cause MIG would've been too easy so now you all get to see my ugly welds :anonymous:

Goal of this exercise was to read and interpret AWS symbols and use a blueprint properly. This mainly lead to everyone having to figure out how large each piece is cut, where to place welds, where not to place welds, where to cut a hole exactly, and the proper spacing on the plates being welded together.

Let's not forget the beveled pieces as a few require a total of 60, 30 on each end, and others a 50 on one piece only.

Sad thing is, I was 1 of 3 to score an A on this project. The other 2 did it with MIG.

The rest of the class all did it in MIG and they were way worse than mine

Well, under $400 you've got the top 2 being a Miller Digital Infinity and Lincoln 3350.

I chose the Lincoln mainly for the 4C lens; it's stupid clear and provides better contrast than other hoods I've tried. Here are 3 I've owned already -

Nice thing is, if you bought her a nice hood with a lens she likes, but dislikes the headband, you can swap it out for a different brand one.

I know @Speedytech7 owned a Speedglas hood but had issues with it.

He can give you his opinion on it if that's another hood she may be looking at.

Weld prints are nice, I never had any training with them, but I printed the list of symbols and started building shit when I worked at the machine shop. They never asked if I knew them and I had a cellphone so it was all good haha

It's crazy just how specific those prints can be, such as the size of the weld, length of the weld, type, groove type and size, depth of a bevel, and more.

The one most students here missed except me and one other is the 'TYP' for typical meaning same on both sides.

We've done a few blueprints already and for our rocket stove done on CAD, we'll be making our own blueprints and using those same symbols.

Are y'all not anally raped when not completely filling the joint

When I went to trade school the worst thing for us on the grading scale was underfill

Our projects were judged hard if a single joint was underfilled, but I guess if those are all just roots or fills it would be par for the course

As stated, this project was about interpreting the blueprints and following them accurately.

Yes we're judged hard on a point scale when it comes to undercut, underfill, and any discrepancies in our welds.

Welds must be tied in, and for any root passes you must have full penetration meaning flat on the other side or more but not to exceed 1/8". Same for the weld itself in relation to the surface.

This project is called the "boat anchor" and welds joints being filled or not are at the operator's discretion.
