Its rare, but we do use them for stuff that switches often or needs to be more noise tolerant.

For example, we had a machine at my last job that turned on a glue solenoid every time a piece of cardboard went under a sensor. Do that 15000 times a day and youll burn up a relay in no time. SSR was the way to go.

If you could help me with a design that would be great. Currently the fans receive the trigger signal to turn on at 100% speed when the alternator is on (engine on) and it KILLS the fans because the drivers just let the buses idle all day. We wanted to do a setup where it changes with engine temperature like a car would.

Are the cane variable speed? Or you just want them to stage in pairs base off temp

The fans are capable of changing speed it’s just we don’t have any logic to do that. That’s why it’s 100% speed all the time. We want it to change on engine temp so it doesn’t kill the life span of them.

Staging would be easier. But if you could fine a temp controlled rehostat then you can probably control fans just by speed

So all you need is a temp sensor with a discrete output signal in series before those contactors. Easy peasy.

How would you go about staging?

Need 3 temp switches at different temps and put 2 fans per relay. So as each switch triggers it will bring on a pair

Damn... Sorry man, glad you guys were able to get there and be with her even for a few minutes before she passed, despite the rest of the family failing to do the right thing by not letting you know earlier. Our condolences to you and Steph

How are the other ones failing? Curious if maybe they lack flyback diodes

We’re not sure. All the inputs and even grounds of the solenoids are fused but they never pop. The one that failed today had completely burnt wires. And I think that bus all the fans were bad.

The reason the fan setup is so janky is because these buses never had e-fans stock. It was one extremely large hydraulically driven fan factory. But the coach builder in Spain doesn’t make the hydraulic fan parts anymore so we were SOL and had to convert it.

No, they’re DC fans. They’re cooling a 14.9l Cummins engine on a 60 foot bus haha.

I’ve never heard of AC fans on a vehicle, maybe industrial stuff uses like an inverter or something I don’t know about?
