1st Gen Lunchtable Thread - General Discussion

I remember well growing up with that shit. Every July, like clockwork come evening, a wall of dust blowing in from the east valley. Definitely not fun.

Went to pick my daughter up from her nursery school and take her home, she stayed for lunch and when I arrived she was sitting on the other side of the room from all the other kids eating together.
Asked the teacher what was going on and she told me that she wanted to eat by herself away from everyone else

She is definitely my kid

Silent lunch was my life back in elementary school. But not because I wanted it. Apparently some people thought I was chatty in class.

Worst was when my mom would come to eat with me, only to find me at the SL table by myself.

 

I moved around a lot as a kid, went to a few different high schools in different states. In Oregon/10th grade I had a hard time making friends and would eat lunch in the bathroom stalls to avoid looking like a loner in the lunch room

Man, all this talk of elementary school

I was in the GATE program, spelling bee champ, and all.

Yet I also got in trouble for multiple fights I had gotten into

 

I needa figure out what I wanna ask if I wanna sell it

No, definitely was

But that's because it was the only time I'd be rewarded for anything. Wasn't good enough to have perfect attendance or make honor roll every month.

Dad made it a point that I have to excel at everything I try and do. Only then would he take me to the PX and get me a new video game, or buy me a new catcher's mitt or gloves or something.

 

That's basically why I'm such a hardass on myself.

Made Dean's list and passed every bend test and got certified for welding school, and when I graduated I didn't even let my in-laws or wife celebrate

I remember saying something along the lines of "you go to school to learn and graduate, there's no other choice"

 

If we ever have kids, I hope I don't instill the fear that failing at anything is not an option.

As a kid, I was scared if I didn't excel at something.

 

You drive big rigs; that's badass in itself!

But yeah, it could be that old mentality too that you absolutely had to work hard if you were to ever succeed.

And that's not a bad thing, I mean it still holds plenty true (even in today's world of participation trophies and all). But no kid should ever go home scared of bringing home a B, or not beating everyone at track or what have you.
