i use a container with mesaurements.. drain into it, put the same amount back in. (i do it with the trans cold so that the fluid level isnt higher or lower than what the new fluid would be at..)

 

Yeah I've been meaning to do a flush but you get lazier as you get older. I keep saying someday but it may never happen.

Yes, this. Was thinking of ordering one of these to have a good idea of exactly how much was drained.

 

No I don't think it works that way. It won't suck the fluid in. It has to be pumped in. The machine we had at the shop pumps new fluid in.

So DIYrs will refill the pain after 4-5 qrts comes out or use some sort of electric pump.

 

The whole flush the transmission/fluid exchange worries me. Too much info out there about possibly breaking loose deposits and then clogging it up killing the trans. Figure I would do the drain/fill thing and repeat.

 

I'd get a much bigger container that. Even though you'd only be pumping out 4-5 qrts at a time it'll get messy with a container that small. Just use a 5 gallon bucket or water bottle. Pour 4 or 5 qrts of water in then mark a line.

 

4 quarts isnt enough. usually get like 5.5 qts out of a trans

 

I used to be scared too but for that to happen your trans has to be really worn. And you'll see that kind of condition in the oil. Like really black & probably smell burnt.

 

i've flushed 200k miles transmissions before... your fine as long as the fluid isnt black... also the filter on these transmissions is just a steel mesh.. dont worry about it.

 

i just do drain and fills on mine... drain, add same amount of new fluid that came out. drive around the block. drain add new fluid back in... repeat 3rd time if its still not red red.

 

I could be wrong about DIYrs using a pump, I forget. But fluid won't settle much back in the pan in that short of time. It stays suspened in trans, not like an engine. The same reason why you drain the pain & you only get like a 1/3 out.

 

Waste of money & time. You can just clean it if you need to but most likely not. And clean the magnets in the pan if it has them.

It's not a filter. It's literally just a mesh screen.

 

the newer toyotas has fiber type filters. those should get replaced once in a while. these mesh ones usually dont have shit in them. just pull the pan to inspect and clean the magnets.

 

basically if you have anything in the filter of a a340 trans... well you probably have something borked, the dont really filter very well. they just keep big shit out

 

I have no idea how someone can clean the strainer. It's design makes it impossable.

Just replace it if it's that important to you.

If you have particles big enough where that "filter" needs to get replaced there are more issues to worry about on this trans.

 

i mean... you can clean it by back flushing it if you pull it out.. but at that point just replace it. i pulled mine out at 276k. fluid had been replaced 3 times... i cut the thing open and didnt see shit in it..

 

it shouldnt.. is the top black or orange? the black dipsticks are the ones that say that.. that means you have ws.. but none of the 1st gens should have WS
