Fix the frame and put new wood in for the door, it probably rotted or the frame cracked somewhere

 

One of the e-torx bolts for the upper hinge was replaced with a carriage bolt and a washer and nut. They tried fixing it with some string and some eye bolts, but it didn't seem to help.

 

so either the door frame is sagging or the trailer side of the door frame is sagging. Putting a long bolt in the hinge is an old carpenters hack that is really only temporary

 

What could be causing the sagging, wood rot like you said?

Even just weight over time will do it, but it if ever got wet and settled like that that can happen. Because of the thin nature of enclosed trailers the fit and finish is never perfect if it still closes don't worry about it yet

 

It closes and locks fine, it's just that there's a slight 0.5 inch gap that's about 3 inches long near the left of the door that can let water in.

Should I rebuild it with new plywood? Or would those turnbuckle 'X' solve the problem? That's what the maintenance people did to it before, they made an 'X' out of cheap rope and small eyelets.

 

You can try a turn buckle, it might work for a bit, you may eventually have to remake it, I'd splurge and use 3/4" plywood and give it a good coating of sealant on the cut edges if you do.

 

Yes, string. I wish I took a picture. You know how you're supposed to use metal wire and turnbuckles? They did it with some cheap rope, or what is more accurately string, and some cheap screw in eyelets.

 

I honestly don't mind rebuilding the door. Now is the time to make it ship-shape before I drop money into upgrading it.

Well the door isn't going anywhere, there's a hefty locking mechanism that latches the entire door securely. It was just supposed to keep the door from sagging.

Their hearts were in the right place, but their heads were not.

 

I said it was maintained, not fine tooth combed maintained. The most important thing is they always re-packed the bearings.

At least they did something about it. Some people wouldn't even bother.

 

Of course this shit shows up once I buy a trailer.

 

I can't lowball. It's not in my nature, I hate doing that to people.

I figured a shell is just too difficult to remove and replace all the time. A trailer is so simple to just unhitch and leave somewhere.

I didn't want that shell because it had no toolboxes, I was looking at the shell with the barn doors and the built-in toolboxes for $850 from the shell dealer.

 

You probably have $1-2k of parts left in that truck as it sits. Who knows what's wrong with it.
