It's so hard to find phones with unlockable bootloaders these days...
If you don't care about that sort of thing, best deal on the market right now per unit of performance is probably the S20 FE, renewed from Amazon for $190

But I'm returning mine for a Pixel 6 because I need my root & Magisk

 

Hmm...half eaten chow mein/orange chicken wrap I forgot to refrigerate at work yesterday....came into work late and starving from the tire install so I risked it, here's hoping I don't regret that.

yeah the orange chicken I can definitely see that, any more than one serving size is just too much and even that is pushing it. Probably why I saved half of it yesterday lol.

I thought YouTube vanced died officially now and YouTube was patching out API calls it used to eliminate it entirely

Yes you're correct the developer was ordered to stop, but the manager was still robust enough to push updates for a little while, and they still haven't fully patched out the last version. So at one point I thought it broke (app said 10% of users experience the UI change that occurred), but I just re-ran the patch and it worked again. The only thing that has been patched seems to be that I now get static ads on my home screen as I scroll. I'm honestly shocked it's worked this long. It may be solely because I had the Magisk version, not just the standard root version.

 

I used it for a minute before it was given the axe, it didn't work that well anymore when I stopped using it and now I just use my pi-hole at home.

 

caught my attention on the second point there. I lost access to good torrent sites for free music when they did all the interweb cleaning out in ~2019.

Basically all rooting (unless supported by default) is done through unlocking the bootloader and patching Magisk onto part of the system image nowadays. They used to do it a bit differently, and I'm too out of the loop to describe the differences. The bootloader unlock, if not supported by the manufacturer, has to wait on hackers (looking at XDA here) to crack it, but once that's done it's smooth sailing and you can flash whatever you want on there.

But ya I really don't download music anymore though either. I just hope Spotify will give us a chance to download our playlists if they ever go kerplunk.
