I didnt think it made any sense either lol. I'm using a 500va 480 to 120 step down transformer, the fan is the only load on it. I'm doing what I learned at the panel shop and grounding the N side of the transformer directly to the enclosure back pan. I didn't mess with those connections at all, just swapped where L and N attach to the fan motor.

I even swapped back in the 22mf cap with the leads switched. It died (do I definitely need the 40mf) but it ran for 38min before shutting off where previously it ran for only 20min

Yeah it's nice seeing all the green for a change. Here's hoping this summer doesn't suck like usual and it just makes for bigger fires

Ummmmm... are you sure that's running at 120V?

I'm thinking that's only a 2:1 step-down transformer, unless the wiring diagram isn't representing everything inside

Also I can't see, are 3-4 bridged on the high side, and 5-4 and 3-2 on the low side?

    And where is 1 going?

I'm sure lol it's a "try to fit all applications" transformer, primary can be 240 or 480. Here's a zoomed in shot to show the jumpers.... plus I checked it with my meter, 125V no load 119V when the fan is runningScreenshot_20230306_095126.jpg

Ok, I'm thinking the HV winding is 2x the turns and you can bridge to get 4x, and the LV is x1 or x2, respectively...so that's fine. The fuse threw me off a little too.

Cheap trick I learned at the panel shop, fuse for the secondary bolted directly to the transformer. Boss man prefers breakers. But there's literally zero room for another breaker lol

What's the voltage rating on the cap they gave you/blew up?

    450V

    Which was weird to me because (at least state side) I've only ever seen 370v or 440v. I didn't have a 40mf 440V cap but a 40mf 370V, so that's what I'm using:anonymous:

Highest voltage I saw in all my testing last week was 160V

Oh also... if those impedances we got before are accurate, you're way overloading that transformer (500VA vs ~1200W). That could definitely be your issue.

Idk how that wouldn't be blowing your 4A fuse though....

Yea I know I'm using 92% and I shouldn't use more than 80% of a transformers capacity but I physically can not fit a 750va one in this enclosure.

I'm pulling a classic dick OEM move by using something that will work but not last for as long as it could. Thankfully these units are used sparingly, and when they are in service it's inconsistent... customer only cuts for less than an hour before needing to shut the unit down and reposition everything.

I'm just over here strapping fans to my transformers so I can pull 100% duty cycle at 99.999999999999999999999999999~% load.

Listen if it's capable of a certain amperage I should be allowed to use ALL the amperage :anonymous:

Submersing in oil and pumping through a heatsink is the way to go haha
