People that are really into car stuff and engine building have tons of those things just to store the engines they've built but arent using yet so they're usually pretty cheap. I have a buddy with a room full of them with Chevy and Mopar v8s hung on em

A stock rebuild on a SBC by a first timer is worth about $0-250

One can still buy a a new 4 bolt main crate engine for just over $2k with a 3 year 100k warranty and all new parts.

Only $250? Even the cores are worth more than that.

    Look who posted that though...

Anyway, you can go straight for hard mode, there's a big market for well built Compound Turbo 1FZ-FE Land Cruiser engines

    You're right.

Are the Japanese v6's/v8's really that hard to rebuild?

    Beautiful engine.

There is a huge lack of Chevy C/K's at my local junkyards, lots of 5.7l Corvettes - albeit not the 350 Block. These are really common engines, right?

No matter how much Googling I do, I can't find a list of cars that came with the Chevy 350.

Yes, theres a lot more going on in a Japnese v8 and v6 (most are DOHC) so even just doing the heads is a big job on its own. Hell my VG30 is only an SOHC and I'd rather not rebuild the head myself although I'm 100% sure I could.

A 5.7 corvette at least up until the end of the C4 was a 350. 5.7L is 350ci...

    5VZ is DOHC, I assume?

How hard is it to rebuild those, truly?

I assume the 4 Bolt 350's are worth more than the 2 Bolts. I guess I'll just have to go check all the old American Sports Cars and 3/4 Ton trucks for a casting number.

I'm sure they are, but unless that rebuild is coming out of a reputable builder I'm not paying market price.

Let's say you buy a core for $250, put in another $150 in machine work, another $350 for a rebuild kit you're up to $750 just in parts including no labor and assuming some parts like the cam are good to be reused. There's also the possibility the block or heads you take in can be found to be garbage or need so much machine work they're not worth fixing.

Yeah, even your 3RZ is DOHC but 5VZ is a V engine so it has two DOHC heads. Being Japanese and not frequently rebuilt means theres less info, less the machine shop will know about them and more expensive and possible OEM only parts

I'm just looking for a good cheap engine to rebuild before I take on the 5VZ. If I break even, then that's really all I care about.

Yeah 4bolts can hold more power to the crank for sure, lots of american junk came with 305s and 350s, not hard to find. A 2 or 4 bolt wont make or break you

That's the downside to buying a Japanese truck with a Japanese engine. They never goddamn break.
