@Kwikvette @Wulf you remember that muffler I had to fix awhile back? It came back for a broken muffler again :bananadead:

Thankfully, amazingly enough, my shitty ass cast steel to thin gauge steel weld wasn't what broke! It's my guesstimate that the stack was too tall so the diesel vibration at an idle caused enough flex for it to break.

My gross booger welds that didn't break20230505_081854.jpg 20230505_081908.jpg

Broken factory weld on the stack.. closer inspection the metal beneath the factory weld broke... hopefully i can hot metal glue back together okay
    20230505_081954.jpg

Although when it was here previously, there was cracking around the outlet that I tried repairing and the metal broke right above my repair, so I'm sure I'm partially at fault :anonymous:

Not sure, this is only the sencond unit we've produced with the Hatz engine, normally we use the Kohler and the muffler is much beefier on that. Looking at other OEMs use of this Hatz, none of them put a stack on the end of the muffler so I'm going to assume, yes, it is common to break there lol

I'm happy with the repair, I ignored what my old boss told me when setting up the volts and wire speed, and went with the Lincoln recommendations. Came out waaaaaay cleaner20230505_093429.jpg

Weldors get way too caught up on dimes and shit; a stringer is more than enough in many situations and it's only when you're welding thicker metals that you'll want to use another technique.

Main reason is because a weave is slower thus introducing more heat to the base and creating a good fusion. But too slow or too much heat will lead to a brittle area just outside the actual weld.

Yea I've found with my fly-by-night welding education and experience, the only time I need a weave is when I'm welding two different thicknesses together. I have way more luck with pushing straight stringers

I'm happy. hopefully it lasts a year, so he has to buy the next muffler :laughing:20230505_100557.jpg

Definitely will; won't be surprised to see it come in for another weld repair (not one of your own).

One thing though, why don't you throw a coat of high heat paint or something after you're done :luvya:

I've welded professionally but I'm not a professional welder... I'm sure you have far surpassed us here by now.

Depends how today goes. I'm going to make some brackets either way for my intercooler tonight though and maybe rough out an exhaust system
