part of it I think, is that he also rents out the guest house on this property to another tenant (girl that's lived there longer than us, she's really cool). Combined I think the monthly income is probably pretty comparable to most places. But yeah... to not have a rent increase in 7 years, especially in recent years with this crazy ass world, is pretty lucky.

We've considered asking him if he'd consider selling us the house including the guest house, just to see what his price would be and if he'd be interested. But it's still just a 2 bedroom, having a 3rd bedroom you have to access in the backyard would not be very convenient with small children lol.

Seriously tho, I often wonder that. Not everyone can just have some $200k a year tech job. Someone has to work at McDonalds and Starbucks.

yeah I shouldn't joke really, it's a sad state of affairs and as much as I complain I have it pretty good compared to a lot of people struggling to get by around here.

No you're definitely right to wonder about that, because it's a very real predicament for a lot of people. Lots of shared living arrangements to bring overall cost down, or living at parent's places I imagine.

I had no idea Richmond VA would be so expensive. Must be the proximity to DC?

A lot of people around here, especially near us on the edge of LA county, commute from other areas that they reside in. San Bernardino county just down the highway from us is way cheaper to live in overall.

It's definitely awesome, although making this trek tells me I'd be much happier on the OR coast vs the CA

Actually down in Fayetteville you can find a decent 1bdr for $800 a month but Bentonville is just outrageously overvalued. Were gonna move down here after our lease is up now that my job is down here.

I don't spend time up there really, but it's gotten quite nice over the years. Plus VCU is there. Richmond is closer to here than it is to DC though. The places that have gotten expensive because of DC are the more rural/suburban areas that surround it.

I've heard a lot of those OR coastal towns like Newport have been overrun by all the laid off tech workers and WFH army, and rents have gone way up as a result.

Seems to be the case, each town like Newport has a new "High end" restaurant to appeal to those people

Multigenerational living seems to be having a little renaissance around here. Not so much in the traditional sense in that a child and his wife and kids are under one roof with the folks, but on the same property and they have a house on it or are in a nice guest house. Obviously that requires land but I know of a few family friends that have done that. Not the worst way to go if you all get along. Saves on rent and buying a home in this zip code is nuts right now.

Ina lot of other countries that's the norm for 3-4 generations to live in the same house/property

Very true. I only have friends in France (as far as places where that is normal that I know), but they do it. Doesn't seem to bother them :notsure:
