I was watching a video on Youtube of someone going through divorce in like North Carolina or something and I recall them saying they had to be separated for a year before they could even file for divorce!

A quick Google says you have to be separated for 6 months before you can file and it has to have been at least 12 months before a judge can grant it.

Damn, I mean kind of makes sense but that'd suck if you one member was already "checked out" before deciding to separate only to prolong getting divorced.

It's common, each state's has different time tables.
Idaho is 21 days. I pushed a bit longer to after the first to simplify taxes.
The sticky part is the financial liability. Basically if you're married and one spouse say buys a new car, that debt is shared between both people. So you could really make things messy. In Idaho, once we filed, you can have the date set on when you separated so that financial liability from that point forward is controlled. They implement an immediate restraining orderer for financial aspects, basically you legally cannot be spending money on things outside of necessity of life to protect the other party from one that wants to, like in my example, but a new car thinking they are only going to be on the hook for half the debt. I imagine that this format exists for the longer cooling off period states. Once you are through that phase you can finalize and the judge will sign the decree and you are set free.

That also sounds almost exactly like that lol

I'm not sure if my truck was auto or MT last time I did this... I think MT, I've shredded the ADD dog teeth before, but no damage to R&P lol

that’s good to hear, I hate standing on my head.

While I’m at it I’ll probably do the leaky ac expansion valve and give the passenger heat too.

Did you have RCVs? I’m surprised the CVs didn’t blow first.

I don't know the specifics, but you have to file for separation and I assume that locks in all the stuff you mentioned there. I wonder if the separation date can be backdated in some of those states. Maybe if you have some kind of proof like one spouse went and got their own apartment or something.

Sucks that some people can't just mutually separate and agree on shit; makes life easy for both parties.
