I noticed at least in my company there's an attitude of don't promote your best guy to management, because then you lose your best guy...
Definitely doesn't motivate me to work any harder

It's less Tacoma and more mod
Mine is weird because they understand that competition is stiff being right next to Washington but they refuse to do anything about it so they consistently lose their best people who even take demotions to work in Washington rather than Idaho because Washington pays so much more. They're good about promoting from within wherever they can which I applaud them for but it's just not enough salary scale wise. The only reason I stayed so long is just because the people here are actually pretty decent, like honestly nobody I work with really bugs me and management are nice and understand that there's a problem they need to take care of but I think they just don't have any backing from the state to make it happen.

Yep, sadly it's pretty universal that working hard doesn't gain you anything other than more work.
This is true. Hence the point above of aiming for average.

My big work thing is not putting in more hours than I need to to be full time. At our company, they expect a lot of people to work well beyond their 8 hour day and 99% of the time I just flat out refuse it when asked.

Sorry, but I spend enough of my waking life here at this company...I'm not sacrificing more of my free time and time with my family to finish something that can honestly wait until the next morning. I get maybe 90 minutes with my kids after work before they go to bed, I don't want to be one of those working stiffs that only ever sees his own children on the weekend.

One valuable lesson this place has taught me...when everything is an emergency, nothing is an emergency.

I should also say that it's easy for me to feel this way in the work that I do, I'm not out curing cancer or working to solve world hunger or responding to real life/death scenarios. I understand some fields require more of a person than just a standard 40 hour work week, or set schedule, etc. I could definitely see the honor in sacrificing your time for that kind of work. But in my line? Fuck no lol. Your files can wait until the morning.

Since retiring, I've really slowed down to getting haircuts about once every 3 months or so.

Got Stephanie's graduation coming up so came to get faded up by my barber. I swear he's always trying to knock 10 years off my age cause he puts this moisturizing/darkening stuff in my beard after he cuts it down

I have a ton of white hair but most of it is hidden now
