Those are some harty MF's. We moved across the state in the winter once and my brother drained everything but maybe 2" of water from the tank so we could carry it, the water half froze on the trip but they survived and later one of them jumped out and got stepped on and still survived but was a little crooked for a long ass time.

Yeah they are, but damn sounds like you had Marines in your tank

We have them cause the kid loves watching them; way more active than anything else in the tank

My brother is also a Marine so that poor fish never had a chance haha.

I was always a fan of big Oscar tanks myself. had a separate tank for breeding guppies and mollies to supply the food and everything

Never thought about breeding guppies as feeders

I know people do that for minnows and gold fish though but makes sense for the guppies and mollies; they have babies like crazy

We're going to set up a 50-55 gallon in a few weeks or months however I'm trying to decide whether I want to go with a single slab of granite for the top or those large granite tiles

I hear Oscars have great personalities

Glass marbles make for easily cleaning. I never tried anything else but aquatic gravel and then the marbles.

Oscar's are magic man, I was going out of town for a couple weeks and thought if I just dump a shit load of goldfish in the tank they'd have food for a while but between the 2 Oscar's they ate something like 95 goldfish in 24 hours. There were 3 survivors after that golden massacre that lasted more than a month before the Oscar's finally got hungry again

Oh my bad I meant, granite slab as the top of a stand I'd make myself

Something to match the kitchen entry-area cause it's all granite counter tops and island; hate to disrupt that aesthetic

I love gravel, cause it's heavy enough to stay at the bottom even when I vacuum stuff up

But I'd love an Oscar and have considered it for the bigger tank I'm planning. They can really make a mess in their tank though? I'm thinking of going with a nice large aquascape too...

Back to zebras, I had a buddy in college that did a study on the effects of estrogen on fish using (I guess it's common to find high estrogen in the water ways around agriculture areas from the fertilizers) he had something like 10 tanks in the college basement with increasing amounts. Poor fish were trans gender at the end, all the males became not that and they were unable to reproduce. It was all part of his theory on why the fish populations in an area he was researching were critically low

It's crazy you mention that, cause in general they are popular in the research community. More so than other fish.

    Maybe due to its hardiness?

I'd like to nominate my koi as hardiest fish, they manage to live completely care free in 450gal tank with whatever food mother nature provides and a waterfall that only is able to run for 8ish months of the year. Mofos didn't even car that the thing froze 5" thick this winter on top

Very hardy and easily acquired. I was talking to another guy about my fish at the time and he mentioned his little girl was obsessed with having a fish tank but everything they tried would die so he had given up until I gave him some baby guppies and told him to get her some zebras.

Biggest one is maybe 7-8" but he's thicc. Thankfully they aren't getting too big, I worry about that actually, dunno what I would do if they grew much since there's about 14 in there right now. They're mostly small guys

Rasbora are pretty hardy too, unless you have one bully the rest

My rasbora killed about 3 of them; had set up my old gopro only to see it darting and hitting the others

It's the lone rasbora in my tank yet never messes with my gourami or zebra danios

Apparently one person pointed out that it was a specific aggression towards females cause all my other rasbora were female

I'm assuming they're too big for goldfish heaven which is only accessible through a toilet bowl

So maybe just put them directly in the sewer to join the army of mutant aquatic pets

Koi are cool too but I never got into it (too much space needed and it's just an oversized goldfish. Goldfish get huge if they have the space to do so. When I was a kid I remember seeing a school of goldfish on several occasions in the reservoir just outside Blanding UT. I thought it was awesome but they eventually introduced Pike the lake to clear them out.

My mom had a house with a ran down old swimming pool that the ducks loved so me and my brother dumped guppies and goldfish in there to keep them happy and help with the mosquito population

They also have no instinct for self preservation, if I put my hand in the water they swim into it

Yeah we have some public garden areas around here with ponds full of them. I figure they have to be pretty hardy to deal with all the interactions from random people and children all year long
