Bigger is $$$$. This one I'm shooting with now was $7500 used. The next step down is like $1600 which also a good lens.

 

You got mosquito'd too? I was promised there weren't any in Colorado. I might as well have been in the north woods tonight.

If I were to take a guess, probably a much higher quality glass like scopes

 

Man I think it's the worst I've ever experienced. A complete swarm, like wave one off and another instantly takes its place, in your ears, biting through your shirt, it was about as bad as it gets. Enough to grab the dog and get the fuck out of there asap.

So the go to consumer grade lens is probably the 100-400mm f5.6-6.3 canon lens (if you shoot canon, idk shit about other brands). It's incredibly sharp, versatile due to the zoom and overall a solid lens. Most people would be happy with it. Used market they go for about $1600. You can add extenders to them to shoot nearly 600mm before the AF fails. The lens I have now, is 600mm F4 and can also be used with an extender out to 1200mm and retain AF. Basically it shoots further and lets more light in. It's a massive lens, one that the "pro's" use and like I mentioned, very expensive even used.

When I first got home I was really hoping to get a job there doing what I was already doing as a civilian contractor but that didn't pan out

f2.8 is a fast lens, most zoom lenses go down to maybe 4.5 - 5.6. An f/2.8 is faster (let's in more light) and you get shallower depth of field with them. But they are considerably more expensive. People that shoot portraits and such usually try and get super fast F1.4 -F1.8 lenses (I think Canon actually makes an F/1.2 which is nuts), but those are all fixed length and not zoom lenses. With wildlife you want as much zoom as possible without sacrificing lens speed. Those fast and long zoom lenses can cost crazy money.

We just ordered a new Canon 24-70mm f2.8 at work which is a pretty standard one but still not cheap at $2500.

 

But mega zoom is nice
