I truly believe the mechanic just "didn't give a shit" about Nick's truck.

Not so much the truck, but the job itself.

Do you think the lack of priority for getting the job done may have been the cause for also 'not getting the job done right'?

A part of me thinks that, the other part of me just thinks he's a moron that probably specializes in basic work like an alternator replacement, spark plugs, and other small stuff.

There's two sides to the story. I don't know how Nick interacted with him that may influenced his apathy. If he was as good as Google says he probably wouldn't be operating out of the dump nick described either, so the truth lies somewhere in there. People like you, or me, we would take the loss and make things right for a job someone was paying for, and maybe he offered it but basically we saw the text of him saying it is what it is, I did a compression test ( I think he made up the numbers) it's not my fault/problem.

I've done 4 timing belt jobs and three of them went perfect. Only one required me to tear it apart and redo (cam seal, felt funny going in, and leaked right away). For a mechanic to fail at that is something else. You don't actually have to take the crank gear off unless you do the seal iirc so why he did is anyone's guess. and throwing away good parts just because... He is definitely also a hack. He went to school and paid far more money to learn less than he did through all this so I don't see it as bad value for a life lesson. I lost $1700 on the LS I built so I can empathize.

We keep Guenther on some type of dry "expensive" food that my son orders. It must be good for him. My son got him a dog food bowl that looks like a maze, which keeps him from ingesting too much food too fast. We need to limit his food to 2 cups per day to keep him from putting on too much weight.

He really should be paying me the 550, plus 150 for the sensor he threw out, and the 900 I’m having to pay the actually competent mechanic who’s cleaning up his mess. Of course, that’s not likely.

The consensus seems to be that it’s worth going to small claims over anything less than 5 grand though. I doubt I could convince a court to pay for the bill at the new mechanic anyway.

Once the new guy gets it all sorted out, I can help you with a "success story" for about 7,500 Toyota owners in the area.

I reckon it needs another 3 grand or so to get it really shipshape, now that I’ve found a good trustworthy mechanic.

I've seen those go either way. They are definitely not Judge Judy around here. It depends on who has connections with the Judge.

Go back and read yesterday's replies.

It's only morning and you're beginning to spiral already.

I’ll bring the truck and try to get at least some of the labor back like you said. I was just saying in a perfect world, he’d pay me for the sensor too and the new bill for the mechanic to clean up his mess. If the told me to kick rocks, I’d consider going to small claims for that full amount, not just the the 550 I payed him.
