Yep. I thought it was easy.

Best to take the truck bed off the truck 1st. You will be able to get at the SW's in between the cab and box.

It cost me $425 back in 2006 for a bed side from Toyota.

I'll take the damaged bedsides off so I can have some practice before I do it on my good ones.

Any advice that you can give me? Removing, and re-welding it wise?

Plug welding is the easiest welding. Just spot welding with a MIG. You will be amazed at how well you can fill the hole with weld media. A quick grinding and you are almost ready for primer.

You are gonna have lots of extra SM. Drill a bunch of plug weld sized holes and place that piece over another piece of SM.
Start zapping the metal to find the best speed of wire and amount of heat. More quicker pulls of the trigger are better than longer ones. don't even try to run a bead. The pro body guys don't, so you shouldn't waste time trying.

Here's what Blackdawg had to say about it when I brought up swapping bedsides:

I gotcha, I'll probably cut up the old crushed up bedsides and practice on that.

I've done some welding before, I'm just not very good at it.

Hes not wrong, get some .025 wire and get good at tacking little sheet metal scraps, the actual weld is easy you just wanna get your power level so you aren't burning through and getting a lame weld.

Guess I have to buy a drill press then. Already have an 1/8" npt tap. My water neck on the engine has an unused boss too I guess I could do both.

I have one at home or there's one at pops shop in Phoenix. If you don't want to by a drill press. You'll need a drill press vise also.

Right, eventually I will go with a full carrier locker. Even if you dont regear swapping the open carrier with a locker carrier requires re setting the gear back lash.

Eventually I will regear and add a proper locker but I was hoping to just slap it in and go without missing too much of the summer wheeling season.

I love me some lunchbox locker. No worrying about the gear setup, just toss it in and wheel!

I put one of those in my '99 Prerunner back in the day, buddy of mine and myself installed it in a few hours. Worked great offroad but on the street it could be squirrelly or downright dangerous. Luckily in SoCal the weather is never too bad, but when the street was wet or slick you had to be real careful driving around with one of those. For a couple hundred bucks for a locker though it worked like a charm when I needed it to

Yuppp. They actually aren't too pricey but I will probably just weld it up and run like that until I do a full regear since my truck isn't my daily anymore. I had a jeep with a welded rear and the predictability was nice compared to the detroit I replaced it with.

@mechanicjon where are the crash sensor on the front of the truck? I was reading something saying the light can be caused by a bad sensor

It also depends on whether you're running an auto or manual transmission. If you have a manual they like to unlock when you shift and lock up again when you engage the clutch and you can get some surprise traction
